Outward Bound

Published to "encourage a greater understanding of the world, its people and cultures", Outward Bound initially ran a large amount of fiction including the serialisation of John Buchan's "The Path of the King". In later issues the emphasis shifted to non-fiction.

Out West

Country: US

The Land of Sunshine was the first illustrated monthly centered in and on Southern Californian culture. In 1898 it began to include literature and adopted the subtitle "The Magazine of California and the West". In 1902 the title was changed to Out West and published "The Master of Mystery" by Jack London in the September 1902. It merged with Overland Monthly in 1917.

The Overland Monthly

Country: US

Initially modelled on Atlantic Monthly, it made Bret Harte famous. Authors include George Sterling, Frank Norris, Emma Frances Dawson, Edgar Lee Masters, Jack London, Ambrose Bierce (first story, 1871). The second series was a continuation of The Californian and became an important vehicle for women writers.
