Born in Southwark, London; joined the Bow Street Foot Patrol in 1824, became a Bow Street Runner in 1827; when the Runners were disbanded in 1839 he became an independent investigator, an early private eye; then became a chief constable in 1840; retired due to injuries in 1849 and became an usher, later a doorkeeper, in the House of Lords; died in London.
