Initially an annual anthology of stories from Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine, Alfred Hitchcock's Anthology soon moved to a twice yearly schedule, and was even, briefly, quarterly. Its digest format, and sequential numbering, gave it the appearance of a magazine.

Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine is one of the longest-running crime magazines, having recently celebrated it's sixtieth anniversary (and 700th issue). For most of its life it has been a digest magazine, changing briefly to a larger format from May 1957 through January 1958. Although Hitchcock gave his name to the magazine, signed the brief editorial introductions, and appeared on the cover for twenty-five years, he never really had any direct involvement with the magazine.

Note that the cover title changed to Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine in 1993, but the table of contents still retains the full name.

The earliest issues of the magazine claimed to be an Australasian edition of Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine, although by the Jul-1958 issue the magazine claimed to be a British Empire edition, despite the fact that a separate British edition of Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine was published in England from Sep-1957 to Aug-1958.
