The Atlantic Monthly

Country: US
Total Issues: 1707 (to 1-2000)

Although initially it relied heavily on New England, under Howell the magazine broadened its appeal. Circulation 100,000 in 1921 and about 260,000 in 1961. Authors include Mark Twain, Bret Harte, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Henry James, Sarah Orne Jewett, Booker T. Washington, Edward Everett Hale. Still a strong magazine of review and comment in 1999, publishing about one short story per issue; absorbed Galaxy in Feb 1878.

The cover title changed to just The Atlantic twice (Jul-1932 - Jun-1971; Apr-1981 - Oct-1993) but the magazine continued to be called The Atlantic Monthly until 2004 when it was formally renamed The Atlantic.

From 2005 stopped publishing fiction in each issue in favour of an annual all-fiction issue (in August).

Address in 1998 - 2002 was 77 N. Washington Street, Boston, MA 02114.
