The Illustrated London News

Country: UK
Total Issues: 7150+

Initially founded for news and current affairs, it began to run fiction in the early 1880s, mostly serials, to rival The Graphic. Authors include Walter Besant, Hall Caine, H. Rider Haggard, Robert Louis Stevenson, Joseph Conrad. Frank Leslie was one of the early engravers on ILN and took the magazine concept to the US in 1848. Circulation peaked at about 300,000 in 1860s; by 1970s was around 50,000.

An American edition was published from 1900 to 1934 at least, using a different volume numbering system and different pagination, but seems to have published the same articles that appeared in the London edition about two weeks later. For instance, a photo essay by Julian A. Dimock ("The Wild Excitement of Fising for the Saw-Fish") that appeared in the London edition on August 24, 1908, in volume 133, pp. 268-269) appeared in the New York edition on September 5, 1908, in volume. 43, pp. 372-373.

Illustrated Sunday Magazine

Country: US

One of the four Sunday Magazine Supplements published during the period 1902 to 1920 (roughly) the Illustrated Sunday Magazine appeared in The Boston Sunday Herald, The Buffalo Sunday Times, The Cleveland Leader, The Detroit Free Press, The Louisville Courier-Journal, The Milwaukee Sunday Sentinel, The Minneapolis Tribune, The New Orleans Daily Picayune (and later, Times Democrat), The Philadelphia Record, The Pittsburgh Gazette Times, The Providence Sunday Tribune, The Rochester Democrat, The Washington Post, and The Worcester Sunday Telegram.

Although the covers of the magazines were typically simply called The Sunday Magazine of the xxxx for each newspaper concerned, this syndicate can sometimes be identified because the masthead carries a small box including the word "Illustrated". In others, the magazine must be recognized instead by the distinctive typography of the masthead, in which (for example) the middle stroke of the S in Sunday is composed of two shaded bars interrupted by white space.

It published a considerable amount of original fiction and in 1915 it also ran reprints of "the best" 21 short stories from other American magazines of the preceding year, as selected by Edward J. O'Brien -- a succesful experiment that led to the founding of the long-running hardcover best-of-the-year anthology series edited by O'Brien.

William Hamling has stated that he was the editor & publisher from the beginning. The first 2 issues were published while Hamling was still employed at Ziff-Davis so Ray Palmer acted as a "front" and those issues give Palmer's company as the publisher. They do not, however, list an editor, allowing readers to assume that it was Palmer.
