Initially a news magazine, it began publishing fiction in November 1937 and became a slick on American lines after World War II. By the time of its demise it had absorbed such similar magazines as The Passing Show, News Review, The Illustrated (1958) and Everybody's Weekly (1959). After World War II it featured a significant amount of fiction by authors such as Agatha Christie, Nicholas Monsarrat, N.J. Crisp, Gerald Kersh, J.B. Priestley.

Continued as Today which was itself incorporated into Weekend.

The (John) Creasey Mystery Magazine was a high-quality mystery and detective digest that ran for 90 issues between 1956 and 1965, mainly on a monthly basis. It was initially titled The Creasey Mystery Magazine and mainly featured reprint stories selected by Creasey, but was renamed to John Creasey Mystery Magazine when Creasey took over publication in October 1957, and thereafter featured a sprinkling of new stories both by old favourites and new authors.

Several issues of John Creasey Mystery Magazine were distributed in the USA. Initially the only difference was that a US price appeared on the cover as well as the usual UK price; but this changed in 1959 to stickers on the cover identifying them as a "Special US Edition", with a price of 35 cents. Although only the month name is specified, these are known to have appeared 4-8 months after the equivalent UK issue.
