The Marvel

Country: UK
Total Issues: 3+224+306+952=1485

Ran early stories of Sexton Blake and Nelson Lee but was best known in its day for the adventures of three adventurers Jack, Sam and Pete by S. Clarke Hook.

The issues are not dated themselves and are usually dated for the Saturday following the Wednesday when they appeared; this convention is followed below.

Note that the magazine was renamed The Marvel Library somewhere in the early 1900s but no details of this have yet been located. Note also that some of the (Christmas) issues of The Halfpenny Marvel were "double issues" priced at 1d and hence were actually called The Marvel.

Incorporates: Nugget Library from 12-Mar-1921; Boys' Herald from 1-Apr-1922; (Sports Stories from 15-Oct-1921 (?))

The Marvellous Magazine

Contained often unauthorized and edited versions of famous gothic stories and novelettes, e.g. Anne Radcliffe's "Mysteries of Udolpho" was cut by one-tenth and became "The Veiled Picture, or the Mysteries of Gorgono." Nevertheless the first specialized horror periodical.

Note: Not to be confused with The Marvellous Magazine published in Dublin in 26 weekly parts in 1822 which was a miscellany of history, travel and science (all non-fiction).

Mary Higgins Clark Mystery Magazine

Country: US
Total Issues: 7

Published by Family Circle, Mary Higgins Clark Mystery Magazine was very mainstream, very slick, and very glossy. It was filled with trivia, lists, reviews, short interviews and even found room for some good stories. Its publishing schedule was sporadic at best, because it was published to fill the same slots as the traditional baking, knitting, etc., magazines which made up Family Circle "special projects" - this also explained the unusual volume numbering. However, it never really found a niche and died after seven issues.
