The Masses

Country: US

Initially the magazine intended to campaign for the rights of the working man. The first issues discussed socialism and ran advertisements for Karl Marx cigars, at the same time attacking the high cost of living, the war, child labor, and praising the cooperative stores.

However, the magazine began to shift focus in 1915 and 1916, becoming much more of a literary voice, rather than focusing the majority of their energy on political issues. Included in most of the issues were fiction and poetry by such authors as Sherwood Anderson, Amy Lowell, and Carl Sandburg.

After the USA declared war on the Central Powers in 1917, The Masses came under government pressure to change its policy. When it refused to do this, the journal lost its mailing privileges. The editors then launched a similar magazine, The Liberator and later, when that was taken over by the Communist Party a further magazine called The New Masses.
