A very successful combination of humour magazine (the approximate American equivalent of Punch), local listings paper, and literary journal with an emphasis on fiction. It is probably the most sophisticated, urbane, clique-fiction magazine of them all, although under Conde Nast's (S.I. Newhouse's) ownership and Tina Brown's editorship it has lost money. Authors include E.B. White, James Thurber, John O'Hara, S.J. Perelman, John Collier, Roald Dahl, Shirley Jackson, Sylvia Townsend Warner, J.D. Salinger, Robert M.
