The Reader's Digest

Country: US

Not important for fiction (although it has published condensed novels, but most fiction is reprint), but notable for two other factors: (a) it has achieved what is said to be the world's largest circulation of any magazine (circa 31 million in 1981); and (b) it established the so-called "digest" format (approx. 7.5" tall by 5.25" wide) which was later copied by many fiction magazines. A British edition has been published since 1938.

Reader's Scope

Country: US

Reader's Scope was the antithesis of Reader's Digest, in format, at least. Some of the contributors are pretty impressive. Truman Capote, for one, was a regular columnist even before he hit 'The Big Time.' Other 'contributors' like Jack London and Poe are almost certainly all reprints, but a fair amount of the fiction was probably first appearance.
