The Southern Literary Messenger carried a subtitle of "Devoted to Every Department of Literature and the Fine Arts" or some variation thereof and included poetry, fiction, nonfiction, reviews, and historical notes. Noted because of Poe's editorship and contributions: he raised circulation to 3,500; thereafter dwindled in literary importance, focusing more on military and naval affairs.
