Ace-High (Western) Magazine
Ace-High Magazine started as a general adventure pulp, published by Readers'
Publishing Corp (a division of Clayton Magazines) in September 1921. They published
some 246 issues, mainly on a twice-monthly basis, and even spawned a short-lived
companion magazine called Ace-High Novels, but the magazine finally folded in June 1933.
It was revived five months later by Dell Publishing, who retained the magazine name but
shifted the emphasis heavily to Westerns (the tag-line on the magazine cover changed from
"Western, Action and Sports Stories" to "Western! Action! Adventure!"). However, this version
lasted for only 15 issues before the magazine folded again in January 1935.
The title was then picked up by Popular Publications in August 1936, who further emphasized
the Western content by renaming the magazine to Ace-High Western Magazine and by adopting
the yellow background on the cover that was synonymous with Westerns at the time. It also restarted
the issue numbering at v1 #1. Bizarrely, however, after only seven issues under this name, the title
reverted to Ace-High Magazine and after a further eight issues seems to have reverted to
the issue numbering of the original magazine.
The covers, however, stayed in the same bright yellow "Western" pulp style as before, and by March
1939 the cover title clearly read Ace-High Western Stories Magazine. Six months later the magazine
again folded, although only briefly this time. In February 1940 it was launched yet again, starting
again at v1 #1 but now under the name Ace-High Western Stories Magazine and published by Fictioneers,
Inc. (a division of Popular Publications), continuing as such for a further eleven years until it finally merged
with .44 Western Magazine in 1951.
There appears to have been little research done into the first series
of this magazine and the checklist below is a "best guess" constructed
from a variety of sources. In particular there are a couple of volume numbering
issues that remain to be resolved:
- The numbering is fairly clear to v29 #2, Second May 1926 but the next I
have details of is v35 #3, First April 1927. With a twice-monthly
schedule and 4 issues per volume this should have been v34 #3 so clearly
there was a volume number slip somewhere in-between, but I do not know
exactly when this happened.
- Everything then continues fine up to v71 #4, Nov-1935, but the next
three data points I have are v71 #6, Jan-1934; v72 #4, Aug-1934 and v73
#1, Nov-1934. Clearly the four issues per volume principle has been
abandoned and the implication is that v71 ran to #9 and v72 ran to #6 -
if anybody has any of these issues I would again welcome confirmation.

Ace-High Novels Magazine/Monthly
This companion magazine was created because "Ace-High readers wanted more
novels; it wasn't feasible to publish more novels in Ace-High Magazine
or to publish Ace-High Magazine more often--hence, Ace-High Novels", but
only lasted for 7 issues.
