Paizo Publishing - ALMURIC update!
Bill "Indy" Cavalier attended Gen Con 2007 in August where Paizo Publishing had a booth.  He inquired about the planned release of Robert E. Howard's ALMURIC and was informed that Paizo had been a little hazy on the "public domain" aspects of the story and that Paizo has decided to err on the side of caution and not test the Laws of Litigation.

After reading the above, I contacted the Director of Sales & Marketing for
Paizo Publishing and was told:
This book has not been canceled, though there were some concerns over ownership. It has been delayed and we're hoping will release in 2008 as part of a double-book month for Planet Stories. I don't have any official news on this, yet, but will keep you posted when I do.

Thanks to Bill "Indy" Cavalier and Paizo Publishing for the info.

Pulp Art: The Robert Lesser Collection - Display open thru Dec. 30, 2007!
The New Britain Museum of American Art will feature the collection of playwright, writer, and collector Robert Lesser in an exhibition on view from Oct. 26 to Dec. 30, 2007. An opening reception will be held from 5:30-7:30 p.m., Friday Oct. 26. The exhibition will feature 75 works of pulp style paintings.

Robert Lesser began collecting pulp paintings, comic books, and comic-character toys in the 1950s. As a student at the University of Chicago, Lesser’s literature studies combined with his fascination with popular culture kindled his interest in studying and collecting pulp art and comic memorabilia. Lesser now owns 750 pulp paintings and an extensive collection of robots and space toys. In 1975 he wrote A Celebration of Comic Art and Memorabilia, an informational collectors guide; in 1997 he published Pulp Art: Original Cover Paintings for the Great American Pulp Magazines, a full-color collection of pulp paintings and history that includes expert interpretation. “Pulp Art” will be sold in the Museum Shop to accompany the exhibition.

In attempts to preserve and celebrate the lost art, Lesser has devoted much of his life to studying and collecting the rare pulp paintings. His collection of space toys and comic character toys was exhibited at the Museum of Science and Industry in 2001 and his rare pulp art collection was featured at the Brooklyn Museum of Art in 2003. The exhibition highlighted works by J. Allen St. John, Raphael DeSoto, artist for The Spider, and George Rozen, artist for The Shadow and Doc Savage.

Pulp art dates back to the late 1800s when author and publisher Frank A. Munsey introduced the first pulp style magazines, Argosy (1882), and Munsey’s Magazine(1889). Named for the inexpensive paper they were printed on, pulp magazines were popular for their exciting fiction stories and low cost. The popularity of Munsey’s magazines dwindled from time to time but they were around for nearly a century.

The pulp explosion came about in the 1930s at the time of the Great Depression. The low cost magazines began filling the newsstands featuring characters such as Tarzan, Doc Savage, The Spider, and The Shadow.  Storylines included action, Western drama mystery, science fiction, horror, and suspense. For many, pulp fiction provided relief from the stresses of the time period. Their popularity lasted until the 1950s.

The style of artwork created for pulp magazines is often compared to Norman Rockwell’s cover designs for the “Saturday Evening Post,” but the character of the paintings was quite disparate from Rockwell’s jovial depictions of everyday life. Pulp Art flaunted unsettling images of violence, racism, sex, and crime. The publishing houses that produced pulp fiction such as Popular Publications, Street & Smith, Condé Nast, and Frank A. Munsey Company destroyed much of the artwork produced for the magazines after printing. The offensive images weren’t suitable for display in homes or museums so artists and auctioneers deemed them worthless. Tens of thousands of pulp paintings were created, out of which only a fraction survive today.

Robert E. Howard Foundation - The Last of the Trunk
Paul Herman has reported that  THE LAST OF THE TRUNK should be shipping from the printer this week.
Those who pre-ordered the book can expect to receive it before Xmas.

Robert E. Howard generated an enormous volume of written works, around 3.5 million words. In his tiny room in his house in Cross Plains, REH kept a trunk to hold all his output that was still awaiting a sale, as well as works that were rejected, unfinished, something he especially wanted to save, or simply copies of early drafts that he would reuse the back of in typing up another story. At the time of his death, that trunk held literally tens of thousands of pages of material, all hand-typed by REH.

In the early 1960s, Glenn Lord obtained the contents of REH's trunk. He had the duty, pleasure, and challenge of sorting it all out, and to begin sheparding those works into print. Hundreds of stories and poems poured forth, to see print in assorted books, magazines, and fan publications.

Ever since the publication of Glenn Lord's THE LAST CELT in 1976, collectors of the works of REH have been aware of, but unable to read, more than a hundred unpublished stories and fragments. A few were published in the intervening years, but not many.

Finally, in this volume,
THE LAST OF THE TRUNK is being revealed. Virtually all the remaining unpublished prose will be included. While this certainly is not his most memorable or impressive work (those works are already in print), it does fill in lots of blank spaces for the scholars and collectors, and perhaps yield a little more understanding of one of the greatest pulp writers.

This will be the largest REHF publication to date, at 672 pages. Hardback with dust jacket by Tom Foster. Edited and with an introduction by Patrice Louinet. Design by Dennis McHaney. Many of the works are incomplete or unfinished. Many of the complete stories are either boxing or high school papers.

Captain Hazzard - New novel coming in early 2008!
Ron Fortier has announced that he has finished writing his fourth Captain Hazzard pulp novel, CAVEMEN OF NEW YORK.  Ron said: It is my first solo novel in this series and was quite a challenge to write.  I'd given myself a target of 60,000 words, the average length of most pulp novels in the old magazines and came in a little over 61,000.  Not a bad finale.  Now comes the re-reading/writing and editing.  I hope to have it off to artist Rob Davis with a week.  He will then begin doing interior illustrations and designing the book.  Mark Maddox will be painting the cover.  One of the elements in the plot is a new vehicle Hazzard invents to help him and his team defeat their foes.  He calls it The Pygmy and Rob did up several sketches from my descriptions in the book for Mark to use a reference as it will mostly likely be featured on that cover.
For a sneek-peek, visit Ron's website at http://www.airship27.com/

Ron is also working on a new pulp novel series with Canadian writer, Andrew Salmon called THE GHOST SQUAD.
More news on this one when it is available.

Moonstone Books is proud to present this original anthology featuring eighteen never before seen tales of The Avenger, the first new Justice, Inc. fiction in more than thirty years! The Avenger Chronicles includes incredible, action-packed stories by some of today’s best writers in comics and fiction including:

Out of Tragedy, a Hero Is Reborn…
In the roaring heart of the crucible, steel is made. In the raging flame of personal tragedy, men are sometimes forged into something more than human.  Wealthy and successful at an early age, Richard Benson was preparing to enjoy a long and happy life with his family when crime took away his wife and young daughter.

Once he was just a man, but now he is a machine of vengeance dedicated to the extermination of all crime. A figure of ice and steel, but more pitiless than both, Benson has become a symbol to crooks and killers--a terrible, almost impersonal force, masking cold genius and a nearly supernatural power behind a face as white and still as a dead man’s mask. Only pale eyes, like ice in a polar dawn, hint at what awaits criminals when they invoke the rage of millionaire adventurer Richard Benson -- The Avenger!

Now, for the first time in over 30 years, the fearless/expressionless crime fighter; the man with the moldable face, the man with the shock white hair and the pale grey eyes, is back in action in a stunning collection of stories featuring all the action, adventure, and revenge Avenger fans have come to expect! From noir adventure and two-fisted action, to emotional tales of inner demons, join The Avenger for an E-ticket thrill ride!

The Avenger: Justice, Inc. Lithograph - Coming in March/April!
One of the forgotten heroes of the adventure pulps, The Avenger, did not achieve the level of fame as such contemporaries as The Shadow or Doc Savage. His self-titled magazine lasted a mere 24 issues, with the writing credited to “Kenneth Robeson, the creator of Doc Savage.” Robeson was actually a “house name” owned by publisher Street & Smith, with staff writers doing the actual writing.

The adventures of The Avenger were brought to a new audience when they were reprinted in paperback form in 1973-1974, followed up by 12 new stories written by author Ron Goulart under the Robeson pseudonym. The Avenger also appeared in a 4-issue DC Comics series in 1975, and in a 2-issue mini-series in the early 1980s.

The Avenger lithograph from Moonstone Books is painted by Peter Caras, a student of the legendary illustrator Norman Rockwell, and the original cover artist of the ‘70s paperback reprints. It will be available in March 2008 in a limited edition of 200, signed and numbered by the artist, with a remarked edition also available at extra cost

THE LONE RANGER #10 Variant
The Lone Ranger rides into his next comic book adventure (#10)  with a very rare black and white variant cover that portrays the masked man in what some fans say is a “dark and dismal” manner and should be avoided like the plague.

Prepared exclusively for Comic Collector Live (Hendersonville, TN) , the John Cassaday (Eisner Award Winning artist) rendition from Dynamite Entertainment is getting powerful “love-hate” reactions from Lone Ranger fans.

“When we posted the cover art on our website we thought everyone would be excited about the special variant,” said Joe Butler, CEO of Comic Collector Live. “But while most of the feedback has been positive, there are those who think this particular portrayal is actually a ‘betrayal’ of their favorite comic book hero.”

The main complaints have centered on the dark and foreboding manner of the Lone Ranger. Steve Boyd, CCL’s Research Director and event coordinator took a few phone calls from fans of the masked man who thought the hero appeared to be more like the Punisher. “You’ll either love this cover or hate it,” says Boyd. “ Some say they love the strength of the Ranger in this pose and the emotion is really intense.”

News concerning the ‘darkness’ of the Lone Ranger’s image began to attract the attention of fan sites and comic news sites as fans of the original Ranger registered their dissatisfaction with the new “anti-hero”. Artist John Cassaday’s interpretation gives the American icon a much more serious and justice-seeking countenance than the original character.

Boyd believes the newer version of the Lone Ranger is actually closer to reality. “If you think about being ambushed and left for dead, when you make a ‘comeback’ you’re probably not going to be all smiles and charm—you’re probably going to be PO’ed!”, says Boyd.

Butler, in announcing the special variant, was quick to pay homage to Cassaday and Dynamite. “Any time you can work with a great artist like John it’s an honor!” said Butler. “We are especially excited about the Lone Ranger series because it’s an American original. And we are thankful for the folks at Dynamite for allowing us to be part of this Eisner Nominated Best New Series!”

Comic Collector Live will be offering the special limited variant issue exclusively on its website www.comiccollectorlive.com and expects to offer a select number of issues at comic book conventions such as Wizard World Texas in Arlington, November 16-18th.

Thanks to Dave Macy for the tip!

REPUBLIC 1939, 15 Chapters

After linking up with a wagon train, the Lone Ranger finds himself in the middle of a cattlemen/nesters struggle. Assumed incorrectly to be the bully boys of all the ranchers, but secretly under the command of Bart Dolan, a rancher's nephew, are the Black Raiders. False accusations, kidnaping, fake kidnaping, attempted lynching, ballot box theft, and the like abound till the closing episodes, which find the settlers gathered inside a fortress for a final showdown. In this serial the Lone Ranger has a second partner in Juan Valdez, who at first wrongly believes the Lone Ranger to have murdered his brother, then fights beside the Masked Rider of the Plains. Unusually, the Lone Ranger appears frequently without a mask in this story, using the alias Bill Andrews.

THRILLING WONDER STORIES - First new issue now available!
The Legendary Science Fiction Pulp Is Back as a Quarterly Anthology!
Announcing the Historic Introductory Volume!
LOS ANGELES - Science Fiction fans will be thrilled by the news that the classic science fiction periodical THRILLING WONDER STORIES is back after a hiatus of 52 years! The magazine first appeared in 1929 and continued to enthrall readers through 1955. Now publisher Winston Engle has revived this legendary publication that figured prominently in the careers of some of the greatest science fiction writers of all time. Readers can look forward to four trade paperback volumes a year chock full of classic stories by iconic SF writers (some previously available only by collecting back issues), new science fiction in an update of the classic adventure style, film and print reviews, science articles, revealing interviews, lots of original illustrations, and more. The roster of writers published over the years in THRILLING WONDER STORIES is impressive to say the least. A very partial list includes:
Isaac Asimov
Ray Bradbury
Arthur C. Clarke
Robert Heinlein
John Wyndham
Theodore Sturgeon
Jack Williamson
A. Merritt
Philip Jose Farmer
James Gunn
Robert Sheckley
Jack Vance
Frederik Pohl
A. E. Van Vogt
Stanley G. Weinbaum
Alfred Bester
L. Sprague de Camp
and so many, many more . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Winston Engle, a diehard SF fan himself, got to wondering, where had all the fun, the excitement, and the sense of wonder gone? The magic and wary optimism of the classic science fiction he remembered as a kid? Following that old adage, "If you want something done right, do it yourself," he decided it was high time to bring back some "good ol' 21st-century entertainment." The result?  The revival of THRILLING WONDER STORIES! And the new TWS will carry on with its time honored traditions while keeping pace with the changing interests of 21st century readers.

Collectors and SF fans won't want to miss the first volume of 2007, now available, featuring several all-new stories from exciting contemporary writers such as Ben Bova, R. Neube, Michael Kandel, and Constance Cooper. There is a rare novelette by Geoffrey Landis, uncollected stories from SF icons Ray Bradbury and Isaac Asimov, and a classic novella from Jack Williamson! Plus classic stories by Stanley G. Weinbaum, Raymond F. Jones, and Cleve Cartmill. Star Wars designer Iain McCaig has illustrated the cover, and every story comes with an illustration, either new or from its original magazine appearance. In addition to James Gunn's article on "space opera," there are reviews of new DVD's by film expert Bill Warren, an interview with SF "superfan" Forrest J. Ackerman, and a thought provoking science article. In short,  a format for every taste and generation!

THRILLING WONDER STORIES can be purchased through the Ingram catalog (for retailers), Amazon.com, BarnesandNoble.com, and it can be purchased or ordered at most bookstores. Don't miss it!

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THRILLING WONDER STORIES

THRILLING WONDER STORIES  began 77 years ago as Science Wonder Stories, a science fiction pulp magazine founded by Hugo Gernsback after he lost control of Amazing Stories, the first American science fiction magazine.  After 12 issues, he changed the title to Wonder Stories, folding in air-and-space fiction magazine Air Wonder Stories.

The renamed magazine published 66 more issues between 1930 and 1936. In 1936, Wonder Stories was sold to Standard Publications.  To fit in with the other pulps in their Thrilling Publications line (e.g. Thrilling Western, Thrilling Detective), the title was changed to Thrilling Wonder Stories. Another 112 issues followed, the last one with a cover date of Winter 1955.

The Gernsback versions featured fanciful technological artwork by Frank R. Paul.  Thrilling Wonder was illustrated by such pulp legends as Virgil Finlay, Ed "Emsh" Emshwiller, and Walter Popp. Among the writers given an early boost by Thrilling Wonder Stories and its earlier incarnations are Ray Bradbury, Arthur C. Clarke, Stanley G. Weinbaum, John Wyndham, and Alfred Bester (whose first magazine appearance came as the winner of a writing contest in which fellow future legend Frederik Pohl received Honorable Mention).

NICK CARTER vs. FANTÔMAS by Alexandre Bisson & Guillaume Livet
adapted by Frank Morlock with an introduction by Jess Nevins

New York, 1910. A mysterious criminal mastermind stages a daring escape from the courtroom where he is being tried, after having been arrested by Nick Carter, and challenges the world-famous detective to a contest of wits: Will the mysterious "Mr. Melvil" succeed in kidnapping the rich heiress, Helen Dodler, despite all the resources of Nick Carter and his men?

This never before translated play, initially performed at the Theatre de l'Ambigu-Comique in Paris in 1910, was penned by two prolific French vaudeville writers, who had the extraordinary idea of pitting Nick Carter against a villain just as cunning and resourceful as himself: an enigmatic character, who is none other than Fantômas, the Lord of Terror.

The play was translated by Frank J. Morlock, author of Sherlock Holmes: The Grand Horizontals. The book also features an extensive introduction by Jess Nevins on the history of Nick Carter.

F. Paul Wilson - Repairman Jack update - 3 new titles in 2008!
F. Paul Wilson has contracted to write a trilogy of young adult novels based on Jack. The first, SECRET HISTORIES, starts with Jack at fourteen years old. Gauntlet Press will be publishing a signed limited edition of all three, the first seeing release around February (well before the trade edition is released). Here's what the author says about the first book in the trilogy:

Time: 1983
Place: Johnson, NJ, a small town on the edge of the fabled and mysterious Pine Barrens. Among its odd inhabitants: an old woman with a three-legged dog; some call her a witch. There?s the town drunk, Weird Walt Erskine, who always wears gloves, no matter what the temperature. There?s USED, the store that sells all sorts of things from the past. And that?s just a sampling.
The Boy: a fourteen-year old named Jack. Nobody knows Jack. Not his parents, not his few friends, not even Jack himself
But he's learning. He's discovering that he has a knack for fixing things. Not bikes or toys or appliances—situations.
Here is where it all starts—with a withered corpse discovered deep in the Pine Barrens…the victim of ritual murder.

And unearthed with it is an ancient artifact carved with strange designs. Where and when is it from? What is the secret of the corpse? What other mysteries hide in the dark, timeless Pine Barrens? And who doesn't want them revealed?  The world, Jack's town, the surrounding Barrens, even Jack himself—they all have…SECRET HISTORIES.

Read for the first time Jack's formative years. You'll meet his mother and father, big sister Kate and his bully of a brother Tom. While aimed for young adults, F. Paul Wilson doesn't write down and the book is as enjoyable for adults as it is for teens. And, as you can see from the above description there's plenty of foreshadowing of events that were to overtake Jack as an adult (i.e. An old woman with a dog…making herself known to Jack when he's just fourteen!)

Gauntlet has also announced that they will publish a limited edition of the Repairman Jack novel, LEGACIES in 2008.
This is the only Repairman Jack novel that has not appeared in a limited edition. More news on this in 2008.

Finally, Gauntlet will soon have artwork for the new Repairman Jack novel they will be releasing in June/July 2008.
This novel will go on sale from Gauntlet in January 2008.

THE TAINT AND OTHER NOVELLAS: BEST MYTHOS TALES, VOLUME ONE
Prior to the first American publication of Brian Lumley's ground-breaking, dead-waking, best-selling
Necroscope® in 1988 -- the first novel in a long-lived, much-loved series -- this British author had for twenty years been earning himself something of a reputation writing short stories, novellas, and a series of novels set against H. P. Lovecraft's cosmic Cthulhu Mythos backdrop. A soldier in 1967, serving in Berlin with the Royal Military Police, Lumley jump-started his literary career by writing to August Derleth, the then dean of macabre publishers at his home in Sauk City, Wisconsin, telling of his fascination with the Mythos, and purchasing books by the "Old Gentleman of Providence, RI." In addition, he sent a page or two of written work allegedly culled from the various forbidden or "black books" of the Mythos. Suitably impressed, the master of Arkham House invited Lumley to write something solid in the Mythos as a possible contribution to a new volume he was currently contemplating, to be titled -- what else but? -- Tales of the Cthulhu Mythos. And as might well be imagined, that set everything in motion.

Forty years have passed since then and a good many words of Mythos fiction written, including critically acclaimed and award-nominated work, stories that have appeared in prestigious magazines such as Fantasy & Science Fiction, and hardcover volumes from publishers all over the world from the USA to China and the United Kingdom to Russia. But while Lumley's novels are all currently available, many of them in hardcover format, his Mythos short stories and novellas have until now remained uncollected.

Subterranean Press is proud to correct that omission in volumes that are guaranteed to be the pride of any collector's library of Mythos works other than tales written by H. P. Lovecraft himself. Here in this volume are found the novellas; the future companion volume contains the short stories. And thus the very best of Brian Lumley's works in this sub-genre, including such recent tales as The Hymn and The Taint, are collected and presented for the first time in this much more worthy and durable format...

WALTER BAUMHOFER: PULP ART MASTERS by John P. Gunnison
For just a few short years, Walter Baumhofer sprang into pop culture history as the first artist to imagine Doc Savage, The Man of Bronze. Baumhofer's unofficial title of "King of the Pulps" was well earned, as most publishers were envious of those few firms that he painted covers and produced art that sold the magazines well beyond the stories themselves. Baumhofer ultimately made the move into lucrative advertising and slick markets in the mid-thirties, but he left behind pulp covers that were imitated for years.

Clark Ashton Smith: "The Black Abbot of Puthuum"- Pre-order price ends November 4th!
In February of 1935, Clark Ashton Smith submitted three stories to WEIRD TALES. Editor Farnsworth Wright accepted all but "The Black Abbot of Puthuum," until the tale was drastically cut and rewritten. When the story finally appeared in the March, 1936 issue, it was 1500 words shorter, a pivotal character was excised from the tale, and the ending was completely different. The rejected manuscript lay buried in the collection of H. P. Lovecraft's executor Robert H. Barlow, and only now, more than seventy years later, is the story published as the author originally conceived it. Complementing the text is a tipped-in illustration reproduced from the original WEIRD TALES artwork of Virgil Finlay. The artwork--long thought lost--was located in the collection of a friend of Clark Ashton Smith's and has not been seen since its first appearance.

The RAS Press was founded in 1961 by Roy A. Squires who produced beautiful booklets until 1987, when he printed his final book, his bibliography, The Private Press of Roy A. Squires. Under the guidance and expertise of Master Printer & designer Gerald Lange, Terence McVicker has revived the RAS Press in honor of that notable anniversary with its first publication in twenty years: "The Black Abbot of Puthuum" by Clark Ashton Smith. This digitally produced edition is limited to 250 numbered copies. The tipped-in reproduction of the illustration by Finlay was ink-jet printed by McVicker. The papers are Mohawk 50/10 Matte and Curtis Flannel. The cover was letter-pressed printed by Lange.

The book sells for $49.95, but pre-publication subscribers are invited to take advantage of a 20% discounted price of $39.95 (plus 8.25% sales tax for California residents).

"The Black Abbot of Puthuum" will debut at the 2007 World Fantasy Convention in Saratoga Springs, New York.

Copies of the prospectus for "The Black Abbot of Puthuum" which shows the typefonts, the inking, and the quality of the printing is now ready for mailing. It is printed upon the paper that will be used for the edition. Gratis copies will be mailed to subscribers this week.

A hardcopy of the Prospectus is free to anyone who requests one.
Inquiries may be directed to Terence McVicker at

This book is forty-eight pages not counting the covers. The covers are soft-cover, letterpress printed, there is a reproduction of the Virgil Finlay artwork, and the book is handsewn.  The book is roughly 4.5 x 8.5.

Clive Cussler: THE CHASE - Available in bookstores November 6th!
April 1950: The rusting hulk of a steam locomotive rises from the deep waters of a Montana lake. Inside is all that remains of three men who died forty-four years before. But it is not the engine or its grisly contents that interest the people watching nearby. It is what is about to come next . . .

1906: For two years, the western states of America have been suffering an extraordinary crime spree: a string of bank robberies by a single man who cold-bloodedly murders any and all witnesses and then vanishes without a trace. Fed up by the depredations of the "Butcher Bandit," the U.S. government brings in the best man they can find-a tall, lean, no-nonsense detective named Isaac Bell, who has caught thieves and killers coast to coast.

But Bell has never had a challenge like this one. From Arizona to Colorado to the streets of San Francisco during its calamitous earthquake and fire, he pursues what is quickly becoming clear to him is the sharpest criminal mind he has ever encountered, and the woman who seems to hold the key to the bandit's identity. Using science, deduction, and intuition, Bell repeatedly draws near only to grasp at thin air, but at least he knows his pursuit is having an effect. Because his quarry is getting angry now, and has turned the chase back on him. The hunter has become the hunted. And soon it will take all of Isaac Bell's skills not merely to prevail . . . but to survive.

Filled with intricate plotting, dazzling signature set pieces, and not one but two extraordinary villains, this is the work of a master writing at the height of his powers.

ComingSoon.net has your first look at a teaser poster for Millennium Films' new Conan movie, based on Robert E. Howard's mythical conqueror Conan the Barbarian. The company said earlier this year that the new version will be more faithful to Howard's original creation than were the Arnold Schwarzenegger films.

LORELEI OF THE RED MIST: PLANETARY ROMANCES by Leigh Brackett
Picking up where MARTIAN QUEST: THE EARLY BRACKETT left off, LORELEI OF THE RED MIST: PLANETARY ROMANCES collects 12 more tales of strange adventures on other worlds from the undisputed "Queen of Space Opera."  Drawn from Planet Stories and Thrilling Wonder Stories pulp magazines, this tome revels in the 1946 titular collaboration with Ray Bradbury--who also contributes an original poem about Leigh Brackett as well as an essay about meeting & working with Brackett.  Harry Turtledove, the modern master of "alternate history," provides the introduction and the book is adorned with Frank Kelly Freas' vintage illustrations from the 1953 reprint of "Lorelei of the Red Mist."

In a review of MARTIAN QUEST: THE EARLY BRACKETT, Paul di Filippo says "Plainly, Brackett was growing with every story she wrote, not yet 30 years old by the volume's end, with the best yet to come." LORELEI OF THE RED MIST: PLANETARY ROMANCES is where some of that "best" can found:

The Blue Behemoth (from Planet Stories)
Thralls of the Endless Night (from Planet Stories)
The Jewel of Bas (from Planet Stories)
The Veil of Astellar (from Thrilling Wonder Stories)
Terror Out of Space (from Planet Stories)
The Vanishing Venusians (from Thrilling Wonder Stories)
Lorelei of the Red Mist (with Ray Bradbury) (from Planet Stories)
The Moon That Vanished (from Thrilling Wonder Stories)
The Beast-Jewel of Mars (from Planet Stories)
Quest of the Starhope (from Thrilling Wonder Stories)
The Lake of the Gone Forever (from Thrilling Wonder Stories)
The Dancing Girl of Ganymede (from Thrilling Wonder Stories)

So, in Brackett's own words: "The trailways of space are before you, to blaze as you will . . . I'll be looking for you when I get back. Right now my little Fitts-Sothern is warming up in the launching rack, ready to blast off for Venus. There's a situation developing there, up in the high plateaus north of the Sea of Morning Opals. I've got to see what happens."

GATEWAY TO PARADISE, THE COLLECTED STORIES OF JACK WILLIAMSON, VOLUME SIX by Jack Williamson
Grand Master Jack Williamson passed away last year at the age of 98, but the ambitious program to collect his short fiction continues.  Of the 10 tales in this collection (three of which are full-length novels!) over half have never been reprinted before.  GATEWAY TO PARADISE includes ten stories from 1938 to 1940, including the original texts of "The Reign of Wizardry" (later editions were amended by Williamson with the 1953 translation of Minoan Linear B), "Darker Than You Think" (this version is 40,000 words, Jack expanded the manuscript for the 1948 Fantasy Press edition) and "Gateway to Paradise" (reprinted as DOME AROUND AMERICA - Ace Double D-118). Included are two true rarities: two stories that originally appeared in William L. Hamling's 1940 fanzine, Stardust. The author provides an afterword commenting on the genesis of these stories, and reflecting on the economic and cultural mood of the nation during the tail-end of pre-WWII American Science Fiction.

Contents include:
The Reign of Wizardry (from Unknown)
The Sun Maker (from Thrilling Wonder Stories)
The Crystal of Death (from Stardust)
The Girl in the Bottle (from Super Science Stories)
Racketeers in the Sky (from Argosy Weekly)
Ashes of Iron (from Stardust)
Darker Than You Think (from Unknown)
The Star of Dreams (from Comet Stories)
The Iron God (from Marvel Tales)
Gateway to Paradise (from Startling Stories)

As with the previous volumes in THE COLLECTED STORIES OF JACK WILLIAMSON, GATEWAY TO PARADISE is a smythe-sewn 6" x 9" hardcover typeset in a format designed to honor the Fantasy Press editions of Williamson's first books from the 1940s & 50s. Full-color endpapers reproduce the pulp magazine cover art for each story's first appearance.

Several volumes in this series are already out of print, so make sure to reserve your copy to avoid disappointment.

Marcy Addwatter killed her husband—there’s no question about that. Shot him dead in the motel room where he was trysting with a blonde hooker. Shot the hooker, too.  But where the cops might see an open-and-shut case, private eye Michael Tree—Ms. Michael Tree—sees a conspiracy. For Ms. Tree, digging into it could mean digging her own grave...and digging up her own murdered husband’s.

Based on the longest-running private-eye comic book series of all time, DEADLY BELOVED brings you an all-new adventure of the legendary Ms. Tree—the groundbreaking female P.I. who put the ‘graphic’ into graphic novel...

A DIET OF TREACLE by Lawrence Block, Cover art by Chuck Pyle
SEX, DRUGS, AND MURDER IN THE LAND OF THE LOTUS EATERS
Anita Carbone was a good girl—and it bored her.
That’s why she took the long subway ride down to Greenwich Village, home of the Beats and the stoners, home to every kind of misfit and dropout and free spirit you could imagine. It was where she met Joe Milani, the troubled young war veteran with the gentle touch. But it was also where she met his drug-dealing roommate—a man whose unnatural appetites led to murder.

The Kolchak Papers: The Original Novels
In 1972, Jeff Rice’s novel "The Night Stalker" introduced Carl Kolchak to the world. This spine-tingling novel of supernatural terror became an instant bestseller and served as the basis for the film of the same name, starring Darren McGavin and adapted by legendary Twilight Zone screenwriter Richard Matheson.

After "The Night Stalker" became the one of the highest rated television movies of all time, a sequel, "The Night Strangler," was released the following year to great acclaim. Carl Kolchak, as the world’s first paranormal investigator, would prove to be an irresistible draw for viewers and inspire a weekly dramatic television series which debuted in 1974. Now, after more than three decades out of print, Kolchak’s creator Jeff Rice has agreed to release the original novels which sparked a television phenomenon! At last, "The Night Stalker" and "The Night Strangler" are together in one volume…

ELAK OF ATLANTIS  by Henry Kuttner (Trade Paperback) - $12.99
Explore the origins of Sword & Sorcery with Henry Kuttner’s Elak of Atlantis! ... Published in WEIRD TALES to satisfy fans of Conan the Barbarian in the wake of Robert E. Howard’s death, the four long stories depict a brutal world of flashing swords and primal magic, touched by a hint of Lovecraft’s Cthulhu mythos. Never collected in a mass market edition since their publication in the late 1930s, these exciting tales helped to establish a genre and are a critical part of any fantasy library. Included as a bonus are Kuttner’s two Prince Raynor stories from 1939’s STRANGE TALES.

Note: ALMURIC by Robert E. Howard has been pushed back until January 2008!

The creator of Conan looks to the stars in one of fantasy’s most enduring science fantasy classics! ... Robert E. Howard’s Almuric is a savage planet of crumbling stone ruins and debased, near-human inhabitants. Into this world comes Esau Cairn, Earthman, swordsman, murderer. Only he can overthrow  the terrible devils that enslave Almuric, but to do so he must first defeat the inner demons that forced him to abandon Earth.  Filled with vile beasts and thrilling adventure in the tradition of Edgar Rice Burroughs, Almuric is one of Howard’s few novels, and an excellent yarn from one of America’s most distinct literary voices.

Paizo Publishing - Now available!
BLACK GOD'S KISS  by C. L. Moore (Trade Paperback) - $12.99
First published in the pages of WEIRD TALES in 1934, C.L. Moore’s Jirel of Joiry is the first significant female sword-and-sorcery protagonist and one of the most exciting and evocative characters the genre has ever known. Published alongside seminal works by H.P. Lovecraft and Robert E. Howard, the five classic fantasy tales included in this volume easily stand the test of time and often overshadow the storytelling power and emotional impact of stories by Moore’s more famous contemporaries. A seminal work from one of fantasy’s most important authors, BLACK GOD'S KISS is an essential addition to any fantasy library.  160-page softcover trade paperback
The contents include:
Introduction by Suzy McKee Charnas
Black God's Kiss
Black God's Shadow
Jirel Meets Magic
The Dark Land
Hellsgarde
Quest of the Starstone (with Henry Kuttner)

This is the first collection of C. L. Moore's Jirel of Joiry stories published that includes every story featuring Jirel of Joiry. Previous collections have omitted "Quest of the Starstone" which appears in this edition and features Jirel of Joiry and Northwest Smith.

For a review of this title, click here.
"Quest of the Starstone" has, to the best of my knowledge, only been reprinted three time before (Realms of Wizardry, Doubleday, 1976; Echoes of Valor II, TOR, 1989 & 1991; Quest for the Green Hills of Earth, Purple Mouth Press, 1995).

Pulp Art: The Robert Lesser Collection - Oct. 26 thru Dec.

Robert E. Howard Foundation - The Collected Letters of Robert E. Howard, Volume 2
Now shipping - The Collected Letters of Robert E. Howard, Volume 2: 1930-1932
This volume has over 100 letters, and is well over 500 pages. This volume attempts to collect all known REH letters written during this time span. Several of these letters have never been published before, and many, many others have only been published in a redacted state, missing poetry, fiction, or other content. All that has been restored for this volume.

For those wishing to learn about REH, this is one of the core collections to have. REH talks politics, current events, and the occasional bohemian humor with his friends, rips into HPL over civilization v. barbarism, swaps Texas folklore with August Derleth, chats it up with editors and fans. A fascinating collection. It also includes another fine cover by Jim & Ruth Keegan.

The Robert E. Howard Foundation Newsletter #2 - Starts shipping next week!
From the introduction:
This issue of the REH Foundation Newsletter features several never before published items of interest. Leading off is an untitled and previously unpublished short horror work that starts "The Seeker thrust . . ." This story is from an undated letter to Tevis Clyde Smith, the letter actually beginning with this story. This story will also be published in The Collected Letters of Robert E. Howard, Volume 3, when it arrives. It would appear that the three evil characters in it are in fact REH and a couple of his friends. We will leave to you to decide who is whom. The name of "Seeker" is also used in a couple poems written to TCS, but it is not readily apparent if this is meant to be the same person, or just a generic persona.

Next comes a few previously unpublished synopses, all presented in facsimile reporduction of the original typescript pages. These are mostly from REH's later years of writing boxing stories, and is likely an illustration of how he was becoming more professional in his work habits; in particular, generating a short synopsis before he wrote the actual story. At least one of these was likely written as early as 1931.

The titles of the stories that go with each synopsis are listed in the Table of Contents. ["The Slugger's Game" / "A Knight of the Round Table" / "General Ironfist" / "Sluggers on the Beach" / "Dark Shanghai" / "The Silver Heel"] A couple notes on these, the synopsis for "A Knight of the Round Table" features Steve Costigan, whereas the version of the story first published many years after REH's death features Dennis Dorgan. The synopsis for "The Silver Heel" is numbered as page 3, the other two pages presumably lost. This is followed by a short biographical piece on Hernando de Guzman, who would become the hero of "Nekht Semerkeht". The sketch originally appeared on a single page by itself, we have included it at the bottom of the page with the "The Silver Heel" synopsis to conserve space.

This is followed by one of REH's high school papers, in original holographic form, titled "A Boy, A Beehive, and a Chinaman". A nice example of his handwriting, and this story has never been published in this original form before. This is followed by the same story typed out, in case you have some challenges reading the paper as written.

Then comes three newly discovered poems among the Glenn Lord collection, all previously unpublished. Then comes a page of REH's doodlings, in this case a couple heads and lots of weapons. Be sure to note the names on the blades.

Finally, on the back cover is a color example of the yellow paper REH used near the end of his life. This particular example is page 15 of "Nekht Semerkeht". Note how the story dwindles to just a synopsis in the last couple paragraphs. This is a practice that one can see several examples of in REH's writing, in which an early draft will end abruptly with just a synopsis.

Hopefully all this material provides some education, some new REH to read, and some new insight into our favorite author.

Sound interesting? The Newsletter is NOT for sale. Only REHF members, those with a Friends of REH ($50) or Legacy Circle ($100) membership, get copies. And they get them for FREE. Along with discounts on all our books. And I'd LOVE to send out more of them. So come join us!
