There will also be a (double) celebration of the Spider and G-8 who both came in October, and in September for the Lone Eagle. And, 2008 is the 75th anniversary for Stteet & Smith picking up and publishing Astounding!
What a year it's going to be!

FROM GHOULS TO GANGSTERS: THE CAREER OF ARTHUR B. REEVE
Edited by John Locke
VOLUMES 1 & 2; 7x10" perfect bound; $20 each

When journalist Arthur B. Reeve (1880-1936) turned his talents to fiction, he couldn’t have foreseen the results. His "scientific detective," Craig Kennedy, took the world by storm in 1911. Kennedy was labeled "the American Sherlock Holmes" while Reeve quickly became the most popular American detective-story author. For the next quarter-century, Reeve worked tirelessly at the writing game. His stories were published in a variety of magazines, slick and pulp, then turned into bestselling books. His newspaper serials were read in homes across the country. He wrote hit movies; reported on the notorious crimes of the day; hosted a national radio program. He was friend to police chiefs and presidents. Kennedy appeared in print, on stage, in films, comic strips and, eventually, television. By the time of his death, Reeve--and his famous detective--were American institutions.

But the astonishing breadth of his career has never been fully explored--until this two-volume set, a major advance in what has previously been known about Reeve and his works.

Volume 1 collects stories from all phases of Reeve’s career. Included are tales of Craig Kennedy, and Reeve’s lesser-known detectives. The early stories that made Reeve famous are here, as well as stories written for specialized markets, and obscure works written for pulps and newspapers; all taken from their original appearances. Since Reeve’s early stories were rewritten for book publication, and his later stories were never reprinted, the stories here are freely available for the first time. 255 pages.

Volume 2 consists of nonfiction material by and about Reeve. Included is a 40-page narrative describing Reeve’s fascinating career; articles by Reeve on crime solution, detective fiction, and his career; a 75-page guide to Reeve’s work, covering his magazine and newspaper appearances, film credits, stage, radio, books, comic strips, and more; an extensive Art Gallery featuring cover reproductions, interior illustrations, cartoons, ads, and ephemera; and complete bibliography and index. 251 pages.

Audiobook version of Red Nails by Robert E. Howard is underway!
Mark Kalita's latest venture is the audiobook version of Robert E. Howard’s RED NAILS. This is a Conan adventure also featuring a wily she-pirate named Valeria and is one of the titles from the Second Annual SFFaudio Challenge. Mark has already released 4 of the 7 chapters of this novella. RED NAILS first appeared in 1936 as a three part serial in three issues of WEIRD TALES magazine. In it Conan encounters a lost city in which the degenerate inhabitants are pro-actively resigned to their own destruction. Also, of note, there’s a cool-looking animated movie version headed for a DVD-only release in 2008.

You can download the first four chapters at http://www.sffaudio.com/?p=1724

Between the Covers with John J. Miller - Otto Penzler on The Black Lizard Big Book of Pulps!
Otto Penzler, editor of The Black Lizard Big Book of Pulps, describes “pulps” for John J. Miller as “the primary source of entertainment for the vast number of Americans who read in the 1920s and 30s … They were called pulps because of the paper — cheap pulp paper — and the covers were garishly colored bright. Usually if they were crime pulps  … there was usually a woman in jeopardy — you know, half-torn-off blouse and some evil looking character threatening her. And this appealed to a large number of readers — mostly male.”

by Bill Black, Mark G. Heike & Bob Davis
One of the most enduring superheroes of The Golden Age returns in this prequel to a brand-new series! Can an untested student and descendant of the classic Green Lama prevail when villains Lady Luger and Fritz Voltzmann herald a cyberspace attack on civilization by Adolf Hitler himself? Since AC Comics' revival of the Green Lama in 1989, he has been a frequent and popular supporting character in Femforce and other AC titles. With the current renewed interest in reviving Golden Age characters, this re-edited presentation of the Man of Strength's greatest modern-day triumph should prove an excellent lead-in for the all-new series! Contains material originally presented in All Hitler Comics #1.

Almost seven years in the making, this Elseworlds-style take on the classic Golden Age hero created by Ken Crossen is the product of hot new writer/artist James Ritchey. This intro to the smart new series presents a darker, edgier take on superheroics, and unlike AC's "classic" approach to heroes and storytelling, these characters are more ambiguous, with unknown agendas hidden around every corner!

LORELEI OF THE RED MIST: PLANETARY ROMANCES by Leigh Brackett
Picking up where MARTIAN QUEST: THE EARLY BRACKETT left off, LORELEI OF THE RED MIST: PLANETARY ROMANCES collects 12 more tales of strange adventures on other worlds from the undisputed "Queen of Space Opera."  Drawn from Planet Stories and Thrilling Wonder Stories pulp magazines, this tome revels in the 1946 titular collaboration with Ray Bradbury--who also contributes an original poem about Leigh Brackett as well as an essay about meeting & working with Brackett.  Harry Turtledove, the modern master of "alternate history," provides the introduction and the book is adorned with Frank Kelly Freas' vintage illustrations from the 1953 reprint of "Lorelei of the Red Mist."

In a review of MARTIAN QUEST: THE EARLY BRACKETT, Paul di Filippo says "Plainly, Brackett was growing with every story she wrote, not yet 30 years old by the volume's end, with the best yet to come." LORELEI OF THE RED MIST: PLANETARY ROMANCES is where some of that "best" can found:

The Blue Behemoth (from Planet Stories)
Thralls of the Endless Night (from Planet Stories)
The Jewel of Bas (from Planet Stories)
The Veil of Astellar (from Thrilling Wonder Stories)
Terror Out of Space (from Planet Stories)
The Vanishing Venusians (from Thrilling Wonder Stories)
Lorelei of the Red Mist (with Ray Bradbury) (from Planet Stories)
The Moon That Vanished (from Thrilling Wonder Stories)
The Beast-Jewel of Mars (from Planet Stories)
Quest of the Starhope (from Thrilling Wonder Stories)
The Lake of the Gone Forever (from Thrilling Wonder Stories)
The Dancing Girl of Ganymede (from Thrilling Wonder Stories)

So, in Brackett's own words: "The trailways of space are before you, to blaze as you will . . . I'll be looking for you when I get back. Right now my little Fitts-Sothern is warming up in the launching rack, ready to blast off for Venus. There's a situation developing there, up in the high plateaus north of the Sea of Morning Opals. I've got to see what happens."

GATEWAY TO PARADISE, THE COLLECTED STORIES OF JACK WILLIAMSON, VOLUME SIX by Jack Williamson
Grand Master Jack Williamson passed away last year at the age of 98, but the ambitious program to collect his short fiction continues.  Of the 10 tales in this collection (three of which are full-length novels!) over half have never been reprinted before.  GATEWAY TO PARADISE includes ten stories from 1938 to 1940, including the original texts of "The Reign of Wizardry" (later editions were amended by Williamson with the 1953 translation of Minoan Linear B), "Darker Than You Think" (this version is 40,000 words, Jack expanded the manuscript for the 1948 Fantasy Press edition) and "Gateway to Paradise" (reprinted as DOME AROUND AMERICA - Ace Double D-118). Included are two true rarities: two stories that originally appeared in William L. Hamling's 1940 fanzine, Stardust. The author provides an afterword commenting on the genesis of these stories, and reflecting on the economic and cultural mood of the nation during the tail-end of pre-WWII American Science Fiction.

Contents include:
The Reign of Wizardry (from Unknown)
The Sun Maker (from Thrilling Wonder Stories)
The Crystal of Death (from Stardust)
The Girl in the Bottle (from Super Science Stories)

Darker Than You Think (from Unknown)
The Star of Dreams (from Comet Stories)
The Iron God (from Marvel Tales)
Gateway to Paradise (from Startling Stories)

As with the previous volumes in THE COLLECTED STORIES OF JACK WILLIAMSON, GATEWAY TO PARADISE is a smythe-sewn 6" x 9" hardcover typeset in a format designed to honor the Fantasy Press editions of Williamson's first books from the 1940s & 50s. Out of Tragedy, a Hero Is Reborn…
In the roaring heart of the crucible, steel is made. In the raging flame of personal tragedy, men are sometimes forged into something more than human.  Wealthy and successful at an early age, Richard Benson was preparing to enjoy a long and happy life with his family when crime took away his wife and young daughter.

Once he was just a man, but now he is a machine of vengeance dedicated to the extermination of all crime. A figure of ice and steel, but more pitiless than both, Benson has become a symbol to crooks and killers--a terrible, almost impersonal force, masking cold genius and a nearly supernatural power behind a face as white and still as a dead man’s mask. Only pale eyes, like ice in a polar dawn, hint at what awaits criminals when they invoke the rage of millionaire adventurer Richard Benson -- The Avenger!

Now, for the first time in over 30 years, the fearless/expressionless crime fighter; the man with the moldable face, the man with the shock white hair and the pale grey eyes, is back in action in a stunning collection of stories featuring all the action, adventure, and revenge Avenger fans have come to expect! From noir adventure and two-fisted action, to emotional tales of inner demons, join The Avenger for an E-ticket thrill ride!

Pulp Writer and Award-Winning Theatre Company
Revive Forgotten Hero for Internet Radio Audiences Worldwide
Bill Cunningham and Decoder Ring Theatre Partner
via the Web to Bring the Radio Adventures of The Knightmare to Life

Fans of "old time radio" (OTR) know "Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men," (The Shadow)  and who "hunts the biggest of all game" (The Green Hornet), but in the Summer of 2008 a long-forgotten hero "Who knows what you fear" will be resurrected courtesy of Los Angeles writer-producer Bill Cunningham and Toronto's Decoder Ring Theatre Company. Audiences worldwide will be tuning in to a radio first: The broadcast of the lost radio adventure of The Knightmare.

The Knightmare, a character modeled in the same clay as radio and pulp heroes The Shadow and The Spider, was created in 1941 for Titan Studios, an independent motion picture company as a movie serial. Cunningham, a longtime devotee of old radio and pulp characters, re-discovered and acquired the rights to the character when researching "poverty row" studios of the period.  "I was interviewing several behind-the-scenes technicians who had worked at the old Mack Sennett Studios back in the days before it was closed, and they kept mentioning Titan Studios - a studio I had never heard of before," said Cunningham.

Digging around further, Cunningham discovered Titan was a first-time production company that was set to launch a serial titled The Knightmare. In a move that was before its time, Titan's head Cameron Tyler - a young entrepreneur from New York - made plans to launch a radio program at the same time to promote the serial. Just as Tyler's plans were coming together, the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor and Tyler's investors backed out. Destitute, Tyler mysteriously disappeared along with all the preproduction work for The Knightmare, never to be heard from again. "When I was finally able to read some of his story ideas for The Knightmare (recovered from one of the technician's basement storage) and look at some of the visuals that he had drawn, I was hooked. I have no doubt that if Tyler had been able to launch The Knightmare he would have changed the face of pulp, radio and serial heroes forever," said Cunningham.

Cunningham immediately contacted Gregg Taylor of Toronto's award winning Decoder Ring Theatre Company and suggested they partner to bring Tyler's radio plans to life. "Decoder Ring Theatre is one of the few companies doing original radio dramas for the internet, and has cultivated a strong following amongst fans of OTR. Gregg has a keen story sense of what works for radio having successfully created both The Red Panda and Black Jack Justice serials. Gregg immediately responded to the idea with incredible enthusiasm," laughed Cunningham, "Which, quite frankly is surprising since he had never met me except via the internet. I will write the first draft and together we will polish it."

"Gregg will stage it with the rest of his troupe of very talented players there in Toronto. What Cameron Tyler dreamed of as his entry into Hollywood has become an international digital co-production."

Taylor commented, "The Pulp Era was a time of adventure, of archetypes and infinite possibilities. In movie serials, dime magazines and classic radio broadcasts, the imaginations of a generation took shape, and a vision of the heroic ideal was created which survives to this day. The Knightmare is an opportunity for us to re-create that world for our listeners, and the chance to work with Bill Cunningham, one of the vanguard of the New Pulp movement, is just too good to pass up. We can't wait to bring our listeners into the weird world of The Knightmare, and we know that they'll find themselves back there time and time again in their own dark dreams."

"Gregg and I will be working directly from Tyler's original story notes for The Knightmare radio drama," said Cunningham. "He's a masked man of mystery who fights evil with the supernatural power to literally become what you fear. This echoes The Shadow, but with a terrifying twist which we hope to capture via the theatre of the mind. The Knightmare's blend of heroics and horror is one of the key elements to what makes him unique."

Taylor added, "Thanks to the internet, we will be able to realize Tyler's dream and give audiences all over the world a one-of-a-kind radio adventure."

Bill Cunningham is a writer-producer who is affectionately referred to in the entertainment community as "the mad pulp bastard." As a screenwriter and producer his credits include: Scarecrow, Scarecrow: Slayer, .Com for Murder, The 2005 DVD Exclusives Awards Show and The 2006 Video Hall of Fame Awards. He is also a regular contributing writer to the Tales of the Shadowmen pulp anthology series from Black Coat Press. He has been a guest speaker at the 2006 Scriptwriter's Showcase on Direct To DVD screenwriting as well as the 2003 American Black Film Festival. As a movie marketer he has designed and launched campaigns for over 60 motion pictures released on DVD.  He can be found online at: www.d2dvd.blogspot.com.

Thomas Allen: Uncovered - Now available!
In this darkly delightful first monograph--also a board book--Thomas Allen selects the pulpiest of pulp paperbacks and then lovingly slices out a figure from the cover, gently folds it into position and constructs a witty and oftentimes suggestive scene around it. In "Thirst," a sultry dame reaches from her cover toward a guy with a bottle on a nearby volume; in "Teeter," a man careens toward the edge of a stack of paperbacks, ready to topple. Dogs howl; ships sail; punches fly.Inspired by a love of pop-up books, Hollywood noir, westerns and pulp fiction, Allen revels in the different roles he must play to create his scenarios: "In addition to being a photographer, I play talent scout, casting director, stage manager, lighting supervisor and film editor." Once his original tableaux are perfectly composed, he photographs them in shallow focus, rendering his prints with the dreamy effect of the classic View-Master stereoscopic toy, which has been a long-time inspiration. From femmes fatales to hard-boiled gumshoes, Allen's newly enlivened characters seem to burst from the hefty boards of this almost toylike book, apparently unable to contain themselves. Uncovered includes an introduction by Chip Kidd, one of the most innovative graphic designers working today. Kidd has used Allen's work in many cover designs, including a series of James Ellroy novels. 48 pages, $24.95
Available from Amazon.com for $14.97.

Vanguard Productions: THE PAINTINGS OF J. ALLEN ST. JOHN - Coming in late February/March!
Vanguard's second volume devoted to the work of J. Allen St. John concentrates on the artist's full-color fantasy, science-fiction and adventure paintings for novels and Pulp-magazines for famous authors, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Jack Williamson, Robert E. Howard and more. St. John is the original grand master illustrator of Tarzan, John Carter of Mars (now in major motion picture development by Pixar), and others. His illustrations inspired generations of later fantastic artists including Roy G. Krenkel, Jeffrey Jones and Frank Frazetta. St. John will always be recognized as the first, and most important illustrator of Burroughs' writings and this book is produced with the full endorsement and cooperation of Edgar Rice Burroughs Inc. Also featured are essays by renowned science-fiction author Jack Williamson; Danton Burroughs, Lin Carter, and illustrators Vincent Di Fate, and Frank Frazetta.

St. John began his career by studying the old master in the museums of Paris around 1880. Returning to America, his notoriety among Fine Art enthusiasts developed with recognition from the Society of American Artists and Metropolitan magazine in 1889. The artist went on to become a professor of drawing and painting at both The American Academy of Art and the Chicago Art Institute, but his greatest notoriety came as he ventured into the colorful world of Pulp magazine and adventure book illustration. For the readers of fantasy, science fiction and adventure, St. John surpassed the work of his famous contemporaries Frank Schoonover, James Montgomery Flagg, and N. C. Wyeth, and led the way for future masters, including Roy G. Krenkel, the Brothers Hildebrandt, and Frank Frazetta.

WEIRD TALES
2008 will mark the 85th anniversary of WEIRD TALES’s founding. WEIRD TALES has got a bunch of plans in the works to celebrate — and THEY NEED YOUR HELP with one big project in particular. In the March/April issue of the magazine, WEIRD TALES will be featuring a list of the 85 WEIRDEST STORYTELLERS OF THE PAST 85 YEARS, and they want your suggestions!

They are NOT just talking about WEIRD TALES authors, though they’re certainly eligible; no, they are thinking bigger than that. Who do you think has made the weirdest fiction, the weirdest movies, the weirdest plays, the weirdest narrative art, the weirdest poems and songs, since 1923? That’s the list we’re after: the greatest talespinners of the weird, unearthly, and bizarre, working in every imaginable storytelling form and medium.

WEIRD TALES is going to take suggestions from readers and contributors through Dec. 31, 2007. Email your ideas to top85@weirdtales.net. Suggest as much and as often as you like — just make sure you give us the NAME of the creator you’re nominating, as well as the REASON you think they should be on the list. In January, five randomly drawn participants will win a free copy of Weird Tales: The Twenty-First Century, Vol. 1 (or another book if they’ve already got that one).

The Pulp Rack's Eccentric Shopping List for 2007
Believe it or not, whether you imagine that Santa will shimmy down your chimney, it's time for The Pulp Rack's Eccentric Shopping List for 2007. (You can see my reasoning for providing the title's adjective in last year's list by clicking here.) Certainly this list will say more about me and my particular interests than it may meet the desires of all other pulp readers. For that, it's probably not only eccentric but idiosyncratic, to boot.

You'll find the list at this URL: http://pulprack.com/arch/2007/12/the_pulp_racks_2.html

This issue: "Thulsa Doom: Age of Doom," unveils the snake lord of Hyboria's early adventures! "Red Sonja: Beautiful Creatures," Part Two continues the Red Sonja tale by Joshua Ortega (Death Dealer) and artist Walter Geovanni! "The Ripper," Part Three concludes the tale of death and black magic among the citizens of Khansa'la! "Sellsword," Part Two features a decidedly different take on the lone swordsman caught amidst a battle between two warring families! All under two "savage" covers, one by Arthur Suydam and the other from legendary artist Pablo Marcos!

Subterranean Press: Kull: Exile of Atlantis - Preorder now - Coming in June 2008!
Subterranean Press is now taking preorders for the limited edition of Robert E. Howard’s Kull: Exile of Atlantis, featuring copious black and white interior illustrations and color plates by Justin Sweet.

The UK based small press Wandering Star issued glorious editions of Robert E. Howard’s work, including The Savage Tales of Solomon Kane, Bran Mak Morn, The Ultimate Triumph, as well as two volumes of Howard’s Conan tales.

Subterranean Press is proud to continue this series of limited editions, beginning with Kull: Exile of Atlantis, exquisitely illustrated with color plates and black and white illustrations illuminating the text. We plan to match or better the quality of materials used in the Wandering Star editions, and will be doing the other books in the series, including the third volume of Conan stories, as well as The Best of Robert E. Howard, volumes one and two, and much more.

Subterranean Press will be publishing CONAN 3 after KULL, then THE BEST OF ROBERT E. HOWARD Volumes 1 and 2, followed by THE BEST OF ROBERT E. HOWARD'S HORROR. After that, they have options on two volumes not yet named. The plan is to release a book roughly every six months. They could be done more quickly as the design files are all ready in most cases, but they do not want to impose a financial strain on those interested by publishing too much too quickly.

Important Note for Collectors
If you own the Wandering Star editions of The Robert E. Howard Library of Classics, you may continue to receive the same number copy of our continuation of the series. When checking out, mention your copy number in the comments section. Please order ASAP to ensure you get the same number.

Important note to PayPal users: our online store does not forward comments when customers pay via that route, so if you use PayPal, you’ll need to send a separate email to subpress@gmail.com specifying which number you need.

Limited: 1500 numbered copies signed by the artist - $150
Deluxe Limited: 50 leatherbound copies, with a number as yet undefined extras (possibly including additional color art and rough sketches)
- $400

Visit the Subterranean Press website to preorder.

Walter Gibson's Shadow ring - WARNING!
Walter Gibson's Shadow ring is going up for auction on December 15 by Mastroauction. (It's also listed on eBay.)  WARNING: The description/history is full of fabrications: The description claims that the ring was a gift to Walter from his wife Litzka.  It was NOT! Also, the stone that was in the ring during Walter's lifetime has been replaced with one of a different color.  Anthony Tollin has written the following to the auction house:

"This ring was NOT given to Walter by his wife, as your description claims. It was commissioned as a gift for Walter by a friend, the Reverend William Rauscher. Also, the stone that was in the ring during Walter's lifetime was a whitish/purple stone, which has apparently been replaced AFTER HIS DEATH with one more closely resembling The Shadow's girasol. Bidders should be informed that this ring was NOT given to Walter by his wife, that it was given to him during the last decade of his life (after his 80th birthday) and that the stone in the ring is NOT the stone that was in it when Walter owned the ring. As I recall, the ring was purchased after Walter's death by a magic collector named Mario Carrandi. Please feel free to contact me for any further clarification.  --Anthony Tollin"

If you know anyone who may be bidding on this overpriced collectible, please let them know that the stone has been replaced and that the background story is a near-total fabrication.
Thanks to Anthony Tollin for the information!

Daughter of Dracula by Ron Fortier and Rob Davis - Now available!
Redbud Studio has announced the release of its first project, a 112 page, black and white graphic novel; Daughter of Dracula.  Written by Ron Fortier (Green Hornet, Terminator, Captain Hazzard) with art and design by Rob Davis (Star Trek, Scimidar, Doctor Satan).

The novel tells the story of Marya Dracula, the daughter of Count Dracula, and how she comes to Berlin during World War One and there seduces Manfred von Richthofen, the famous German flying ace known as the Red Baron.  They have a torrid affair leading to his decision to become a vampire and thus be able to be with her forever as one of the undead.  When he is shot down and killed before the final transformation is complete, Marya becomes insane with rage and launches her own personal war against Allied pilots using all of her vampire abilities to destroy them.

Over four years in the making, Daughter of Dracula is a mature, gothic horror novel intended for adults only due scenes of graphic sex and violence.  The stunning cover painting (which is devoid of all text) was rendered by Mark Maddox.

The book is only available from Indy Planet  or directly from the creators.

Hard Case Crime - Coming in December and beyond!
December 2007
DEADLY BELOVED by Max Allan Collins, Cover art by Terry Beatty
Marcy Addwatter killed her husband—there’s no question about that. Shot him dead in the motel room where he was trysting with a blonde hooker. Shot the hooker, too.  But where the cops might see an open-and-shut case, private eye Michael Tree—Ms. Michael Tree—sees a conspiracy. For Ms. Tree, digging into it could mean digging her own grave...and digging up her own murdered husband’s.

Based on the longest-running private-eye comic book series of all time, DEADLY BELOVED brings you an all-new adventure of the legendary Ms. Tree—the groundbreaking female P.I. who put the ‘graphic’ into graphic novel...

First publication anywhere!  From the bestselling author of ROAD TO PERDITION
Original cover painting by Ms. Tree co-creator Terry Beatty

January 2008
A DIET OF TREACLE by Lawrence Block, Cover art by Chuck Pyle
SEX, DRUGS, AND MURDER IN THE LAND OF THE LOTUS EATERS
Anita Carbone was a good girl—and it bored her.
That’s why she took the long subway ride down to Greenwich Village, home of the Beats and the stoners, home to every kind of misfit and dropout and free spirit you could imagine. It was where she met Joe Milani, the troubled young war veteran with the gentle touch. But it was also where she met his drug-dealing roommate—a man whose unnatural appetites led to murder.

February 2008
MONEY SHOT by Christa Faust, Cover art by Glen Orbik
It all began with the phone call asking former porn star Angel Dare to do one more movie. Before she knew it, she’d been shot and left for dead in the trunk of a car. But Angel is a survivor. And that means she’ll get to the bottom of what’s been done to her even if she has to leave a trail of bodies along the way...
First publication anywhere!  First female author in the history of Hard Case Crime

251 pages.

NORTHWEST OF EARTH: THE COMPLETE NORTHWEST SMITH by C. L. Moore (Trade Paperback) - $12.99
75th Anniversary Edition!
From the crumbling temples of forgotten gods on Venus to the seedy pleasure halls of old Mars, Northwest Smith blazes a trail through the underbelly of the solar system in 13 action-packed stories you won’t soon forget.

Among the best-written and most emotionally complex stories of the Pulp Era, the tales of intergalactic smuggler Northwest Smith still resonate strongly 75 years after their first publication. A staple of Weird Tales in its Golden Age, C.L. Moore’s stories appeared alongside work by H.P. Lovecraft, Robert E. Howard, and Clark Ashton Smith, forming the backbone of the “unique magazine’s” approach to science fiction and planetary adventure.

For the first time ever, all of Northwest Smith’s adventures have been collected in a single volume, including “Quest of the Starstone,” which pairs Smith with Moore’s other famous creation, the fierce swordswoman Jirel of Joiry!

SPECTRUM PRESENTS: THE COMIC ART OF FRANK FRAZETTA - Cancelled!
Arnie Fenner has announced that this title has been cancelled and will not be published.
The Comic Art of Frank Frazetta was planned as a 9"x12" hardcover in an illustrated slipcase: Frank's comic stories would run in b&w, but the intros would include color illos and photos. The project was a joint venture between Spectrum and Frazetta Prints.  The decision had absolutely nothing to do with quality and everything to do with timing and the vagaries and expense of publishing (and distributing) books these days.

Frank Frazetta's creative skill has been showcased in dozens of volumes of published work, but never before have his seminal comic book stories been collected into a retrospective volume. Whether thrilling, frightening, heartbreaking, or funny, the one constant in Frazetta's all-too-brief career in comics was that they were gorgeously drawn. Offering a rare glimpse of the master's creative process, The Comic Art of Frank Frazetta includes Thun'da, the only full-length comic Frazetta ever illustrated, all of his romance stories, and the last story he drew before embarking on a painting career.

Subterranean Press: HAGGOPIAN AND OTHER STORIES by Brian Lumley
- Now available for pre-order!
Prior to the first American publication of Brian Lumley's ground-breaking, dead-waking, best-selling Necroscope® in 1988 -- the first novel in a long-lived, much-loved series -- this British author had for twenty years been earning himself something of a reputation writing short stories, novellas, and a series of novels set against H. P. Lovecraft's cosmic Cthulhu Mythos backdrop. A soldier in 1967, serving in Berlin with the Royal Military Police, Lumley jump-started his literary career by writing to August Derleth, the then dean of macabre publishers at his home in Sauk City, Wisconsin, telling of his fascination with the Mythos, and purchasing books by the "Old Gentleman of Providence, RI." In addition, he sent a page or two of written work allegedly culled from the various forbidden or "black books" of the Mythos. Suitably impressed, the master of Arkham House invited Lumley to write something solid in the Mythos as a possible contribution to a new volume he was currently contemplating, to be titled -- what else but? -- Tales of the Cthulhu Mythos. And as might well be imagined, that set everything in motion.

Forty years have passed since then and a good many words of Mythos fiction written, including critically acclaimed and award-nominated work, stories that have appeared in prestigious magazines such as Fantasy & Science Fiction, and hardcover volumes from publishers all over the world from the USA to China and the United Kingdom to Russia. But while Lumley's novels are all currently available, many of them in hardcover format, his Mythos short stories and novellas have until now remained uncollected.

Subterranean Press is proud to correct that omission in volumes that are guaranteed to be the pride of any collector's library of Mythos fiction other than tales written by H. P. Lovecraft himself. Here in this book are found the shorter stories. Thus the best of Brian Lumley's works in this sub-genre are collected and presented for the first time in this much more worthy and durable format.

HAGGOPIAN AND OTHER STORIES by Brian Lumley

THRILLING WONDER STORIES - First new issue now available!
The Legendary Science Fiction Pulp Is Back as a Quarterly Anthology!
Announcing the Historic Introductory Volume!
LOS ANGELES - Science Fiction fans will be thrilled by the news that the classic science fiction periodical THRILLING WONDER STORIES is back after a hiatus of 52 years! The magazine first appeared in 1929 and continued to enthrall readers through 1955. Now publisher Winston Engle has revived this legendary publication that figured prominently in the careers of some of the greatest science fiction writers of all time. Readers can look forward to four trade paperback volumes a year chock full of classic stories by iconic SF writers (some previously available only by collecting back issues), new science fiction in an update of the classic adventure style, film and print reviews, science articles, revealing interviews, lots of original illustrations, and more. The roster of writers published over the years in THRILLING WONDER STORIES is impressive to say the least. A very partial list includes:
Isaac Asimov
Ray Bradbury
Arthur C. Clarke
Robert Heinlein
John Wyndham
Theodore Sturgeon
Jack Williamson
A. Merritt
Philip Jose Farmer
James Gunn
Robert Sheckley
Jack Vance
Frederik Pohl
A. E. Van Vogt
Stanley G. Weinbaum
L. Sprague de Camp
Alfred Bester
and so many, many more . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Winston Engle, a diehard SF fan himself, got to wondering, where had all the fun, the excitement, and the sense of wonder gone? The magic and wary optimism of the classic science fiction he remembered as a kid? Following that old adage, "If you want something done right, do it yourself," he decided it was high time to bring back some "good ol' 21st-century entertainment." The result?  The revival of THRILLING WONDER STORIES! And the new TWS will carry on with its time honored traditions while keeping pace with the changing interests of 21st century readers.

Collectors and SF fans won't want to miss the first volume of 2007, now available, featuring several all-new stories from exciting contemporary writers such as Ben Bova, R. Neube, Michael Kandel, and Constance Cooper. There is a rare novelette by Geoffrey Landis, uncollected stories from SF icons Ray Bradbury and Isaac Asimov, and a classic novella from Jack Williamson! Plus classic stories by Stanley G. Weinbaum, Raymond F. Jones, and Cleve Cartmill. Star Wars designer Iain McCaig has illustrated the cover, and every story comes with an illustration, either new or from its original magazine appearance. In addition to James Gunn's article on "space opera," there are reviews of new DVD's by film expert Bill Warren, an interview with SF "superfan" Forrest J. Ackerman, and a thought provoking science article. In short,  a format for every taste and generation!

THRILLING WONDER STORIES can be purchased through the Ingram catalog (for retailers), Amazon.com, BarnesandNoble.com, and it can be purchased or ordered at most bookstores. Don't miss it!

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THRILLING WONDER STORIES
THRILLING WONDER STORIES  began 77 years ago as Science Wonder Stories, a science fiction pulp magazine founded by Hugo Gernsback after he lost control of Amazing Stories, the first American science fiction magazine.  After 12 issues, he changed the title to Wonder Stories, folding in air-and-space fiction magazine Air Wonder Stories.

The renamed magazine published 66 more issues between 1930 and 1936. In 1936, Wonder Stories was sold to Standard Publications.  To fit in with the other pulps in their Thrilling Publications line (e.g. Thrilling Western, Thrilling Detective), the title was changed to Thrilling Wonder Stories. Another 112 issues followed, the last one with a cover date of Winter 1955.

The Gernsback versions featured fanciful technological artwork by Frank R. Paul.  Thrilling Wonder was illustrated by such pulp legends as Virgil Finlay, Ed "Emsh" Emshwiller, and Walter Popp. Among the writers given an early boost by Thrilling Wonder Stories and its earlier incarnations are Ray Bradbury, Arthur C. Clarke, Stanley G. Weinbaum, John Wyndham, and Alfred Bester (whose first magazine appearance came as the winner of a writing contest in which fellow future legend Frederik Pohl received Honorable Mention).
