| Abingdon Pulp
& Paperback Conference - Saturday,
June 21 and Sunday, June 22! Curt Philips is hosting a small SF conference here in Abingdon, VA on Saturday, June 21 and Sunday, June 22. (We'll also have some kind of social function on the evening of Friday, June 20 for those who may want to arrive early but I'm still looking at what that will be. Several interesting alternatives - mostly involving food - present themselves.) It's called the Abingdon Pulp & Paperback Conference and yes, this is short notice, but I invite any of you who might like to attend to come to Abingdon and join us. I expect to have a website up soon and will certainly post that link here. I already have intentions to attend in hand from two writers and I'm hoping for more. I'm also looking for additional book dealers who'd like to attend. If anyone here would be interested in being a dealer, or would just like to bring some surplus pulps, fiction magazines or books along to sell or trade, we'll have a place for you too. The weekend will be one of relaxed book-hunting and book conversation with like minded people, and as the name indicates, our main focus will be on pulp magazines and paperback books, vintage or otherwise. I hope that we'll have a couple of panal discussions with accomplished writers, publishing professionals and book collectors, I'm hoping to arrange a special display by a certain local artist whom you've all heard of, and there'll be some local attractions available for your enjoyment including walks in the 230 year-old Town of Abingdon, visits to two major flea markets where *I* find great old books just about every weekend, you can, if you wish, take in a play at the world famous Barter Theater located just down the street, and if it ever stops snowing here in town I'll go out and pick out a good place for us to have a Saturday night banquet. So the focus for the Abingdon Pulp & Paperback Conference will be books, food, visiting the attractions of the beautiful southwest Virginia mountains and hanging out with other book people. I expect this to be a relatively small gathering with a mixture of local fans and folks from across the region (this is where you all come in...). I hope that many of you will be able to join us in Abingdon. Details, prices (cheap!) and so forth should be available right here and on the event website very soon. I'll let you know. As I said, I'm looking for a few more dealers of good books. If you're such a dealer, e-mail me and we'll see if we can talk you into coming to Abingdon. I'm also looking for any suggestions from any of you about other things we might do at the conference and other folks who might like to attend. I can be contacted directly at the email address below. Collectables: THE COMPLETE MAGIC CARPET MAGAZINE - Coming
in April! Girasol Collectables has been very pleased with the positive response to the ORIENTAL STORIES Limited Edition hardcover set, and hopes everyone is enjoying the books. Included are a couple of Robert E. Howard stories, and the only Robert E. Howard pulp appearance of Red Sonya, described somewhat differently than the chain mail bikini she wears in the various comics... the frontispiece illustration for the Limited Edition is an attempt at a more faithful rendition of the character. Girasol will be ready to ship the MAGIC CARPET companion volume in mid to late April, and would like to take this opportunity to offer those who purchased the ORIENTAL STORIES Limit Edition their matching Limited Edition numbers at a pre-release special. After that, the book will be offered to the general public. The ORIENTAL STORIES sets have been going fairly quickly, and we're down to the last few left. The pricing is as shown below, and the pre-release price will be open until the end of March. | Arthur C. Clarke - Passed away in his adopted home of Sri Lanka on March 19. Arthur C. Clarke, a visionary science fiction writer who won worldwide acclaim with more than 100 books on space, science and the future, died Wednesday in his adopted home of Sri Lanka, an aide said. He was 90. Clarke, who had battled debilitating post-polio syndrome since the 1960s and sometimes used a wheelchair, died at 1:30 a.m. after suffering breathing problems, aide Rohan De Silva said. Clarke moved to Sri Lanka in 1956, lured by his interest in marine diving which he said was as close as he could get to the weightless feeling of space. "I'm perfectly operational underwater," he once said. Co-author with Stanley Kubrick of Kubrick's film "2001: A Space Odyssey," Clarke was regarded as far more than a science fiction writer. He was credited with the concept of communications satellites in 1945, decades before they became a reality. Geosynchronous orbits, which keep satellites in a fixed position relative to the ground, are called Clarke orbits. | ||||||
