SCIENCE FICTION, FANTASY AND WEIRD FICTION (1890-2004)
by STEPHEN T. MILLER and WILLIAM G. CONTENTO

This is the most comprehensive index ever published of contributions to magazines in the field of fantastic literature (speculative fiction including science fiction, fantasy and weird fiction). "It is so comprehensive that it cannot be surpassed, it can only be supplemented," writes Sam Moskowitz in his Foreword to this "fabulous guide."

"Few fields have been more remarkably indexed than science fiction and fantasy," he adds. "This compendium, of course, updates all previous such bibliographies, and prints complete contents in chronological order as well as by author and title. But where it stands utterly unique is, in addition, recording the contents of perhaps hundreds of semi-professional and amateur publications which carried an important regimen of fantasy fiction."

This mammoth index - actually, there are five separate indexes - Author, Title, Artist, Series and Contents - is being issued as a set of eight volumes. Indexed are contributions to 1,120 different magazine titles, a total of 15,818 separate issues, with contributions by 25,911 writers. Indexed are 103,171 stories and serial segments, 20,463 poems, and 39,939 articles and columns.

Here is a bird's-eye view of this mammoth undertaking:

* Each volume measures 8.5" x 11" and is red, white or blue buckram with gold leaf lettering
* Each page is double- or triple-columned and highly readable
* Set of 8 volumes, to a total of 3950 pages
* Total number of words: 4.1 million
* Author Index: Volumes 1, 2 and 3 (red buckram)
* Title, Artist & Serial Indexes: Volumes 4 and 5 (white buckram)
* Content Index: Volumes 6, 7 and 8 (blue buckram)
* 276 page Checklist of SF Magazine Index available as paperback edition.
"In all of science fiction history there is nothing like this index," co-compiler Stephen T. Miller explains in his Preface.
"You will find magazines here that can be found no place else. We give you data on magazines that were never published
but that were assembled. We cover the rarest of the rare and the obscurest of the obscure. Ashcan issues do exist and are
indexed here. Important rare fanzines are listed. It's all here."
The publication of this set of indexes is a landmark occasion.
Its appearance marks a milestone in the scholarship and bibliography of science fiction, fantasy, and weird fiction.

BLOOD 'N' THUNDER #8 - Now available!
Issue #8, dated Fall 2004, is an extensive tribute to prolific pulpster and novelist Frederick C. Davis, who wrote the adventures of such popular characters as Operator #5 and the Moon Man, plus hundreds of other stories in the detective/mystery, aviation, Western, and weird-menace genres. The issue begins with an overview of the author's career by Davis scholar Garyn Roberts, who co-edited THE NIGHT NEMESIS, a 1985 collection of Moon Man stories plus the newly released THE COMPLEAT ADVENTURES OF THE MOON MAN. For a look at Davis, the man, there will be a lengthy interview with his son, Rick Davis, and granddaughter, Karen Cunningham. They provide valuable insights into FCD's personality, work habits, and influences. Davis himself reveals some of his writing secrets in an article reprinted from a 1941 issue of WRITER'S DIGEST. Finally, what is believed to be a complete Davis bibliography, listing many hundreds of pulp stories as well as several dozen hardcover novels and non-fiction magazine appearances, will also appear. The Davis tribute is illustrated with candid photos of the author, B&W illustrations that accompanied his pulp stories, and a plethora of pulp covers from issues containing FCD yarns. Filling out the issue will be Rodney Schroeter's in-depth report on this year's Windy City Pulp and Paperback Show, including comments by 2004 Guest-of-Honor and legendary science-fiction author and editor, Frederik Pohl.

THE BLOODY CROWN OF CONAN - A message from Del Rey Books!
We're about a month away from the release of the next trade paperback, THE BLOODY CROWN OF CONAN, and I just saw the loose pages last week. They look GREAT! Gary's artwork looks as terrific as ever, and the paintings adapted to black and white brilliantly. Thank Crom for a first-class production department like we have here at Del Rey.

Remember the challenge, though. The book hits stores Tuesday, November 23, and all you Howard fans need to lay siege to your local book store. Buy your copies as soon as you can after Nov. 23. If you all hit the stores at once, we have a shot at getting onto the New York Times bestseller list. Won't that freak out the literary types!

There are a lot of book stores out there that only sell the bestsellers, so when BLOODY CROWN hits the list, hundreds of new stores will have to carry it. I think it's only actual "brick and mortar" stores--not the online stores--that report to the Times list, but if you've ordered from an online store, don't worry--that'll help, too. The higher we go on the online ratings, the more buzz we'll generate. So it's all good.

Men's Adventure Magazines in Postwar America - Now available!
MEN'S ADVENTURE MAGAZINES IN POSTWAR AMERICA is by Max Allan Collins, George Hagenauer, Steven Heller, and Richard Oberg.  Publisher: Taschen Press.  512 pages.  List price: $39.99.

Battling dangerous beasts such as ferocious lions, venomous snakes, or swarms of man-eating weasels, the hunky heroes of men's adventure magazines were frequently depicted struggling to protect themselves and especially their buxom female companions from the gruesome tragic ends that threatened their every waking moment. Whether stranded on desert islands, clashing with motorcycle gangs, or shackled in prison camps, the magazines' male and female protagonists were perpetually fighting their ways out of dangerous predicaments. To pay homage to the American periodicals of the 1950s, 60s, and 70s that "documented" such outrageous exploits, TASCHEN brings you this hefty, comprehensive guide packed full of colorful cover art, sumptuous sample spreads, and enlightening essays. With an in-depth introductory essay describing the history, culture, and artistry of men's adventure-a.k.a. "sweat"-magazines, as well as chapter-by-chapter exploration of various subjects including the role of women and the portrayal of Nazis and Communists, this definitive study of the genre examines not only the popular appeal of the magazines but also their social and political implications. Also included are publisher listings and profiles of artists and writers, as well as an interview with Norm Eastman, one of the genre's most important artists.

The Nebulon Horror
A small town, an old house, and an evil legacy that became...The Nebulon Horror.

The Evil
He lives in the mountains, in the jungles of Haiti: Margal, the bocor, the Legless one. Crippled, unable to move, Margal moves you instead, speaks to your mind, commands you to act. There are no doors you can lock to keep the Evil out, no barriers he cannot breach. He calls to those needs, and they must obey, you must obey the whispers in your mind, and the visions he causes to appear...

Shades of Evil
The mist rose out of the lake, a slow white swirl stark agains the night. It took shape, changed shape--a bird, a snake, a woman. It floated, searching for something, and not finding, killed randomly.

May 2005
Cloth: ISBN 0-9748789-7-9: $40.00
Paper: ISBN 0-9748789-8-7: $20.00
A self-proclaimed "mechanistic materialist," Lovecraft took an unremittingly scientific view of reality. This perspective informed the whole of his literary output, but is nowhere so clearly seen as in this assemblage of his writings on science. Beginning with the scientific journals, treatises and astronomy columns of HPL's early years, and continuing throughout his life, these writings illuminate Lovecraft's thought in a unique, and until now, largely unappreciated way. As a bonus, almost two-dozen of HPL's hand lettered star maps are reproduced.

THE BOOK OF THE KALEMS
Edited by Mara Kirk Hart and S. T. Joshi
To Be Announced
We have reached an agreement with Mara Kirk Hart, daughter of H. P. Lovecraft's associate George Kirk, to publish a selection of her father's correspondence related to the Kalem Club, the New York literary group centering around Lovecraft and so named because all the members' surnames began either with K, L, or M. Besides George Kirk's correspondence, THE BOOK OF THE KALEMS, co-edited by Mara Kirk Hart and S. T. Joshi, also includes writings by each of the group's members, George Kirk, Rheinhart Kleiner, Arthur Leeds, H. P. Lovecraft, Samuel Loveman, Everett McNeil, and James Morton. This ties in well with our release of the works of Loveman, and next year, the correspondence between Lovecraft and Kleiner. More details will follow soon.

How I Discovered Doc Savage
In honor of the 40th anniversary of Bantam publishing Doc Savage paperbacks it was decided that a commemorative souvenir book would be created.  Notable Doc Savage fans from around the world contributed their stories and it was planned that the book would cut off when it reached 50 pages.  Well, the floodgates opened and the stories poured in.   Unfortunately, not everyone's story was published when the book began to reach an unwieldy thickness.

Volume One turned out to be 92 pages and contains fabulous stories of discover from the following contributors:  Ron Wilcoxen, Howard Wright, Arthur Sippo, Rob Smalley, Glenn Horner, Jeff Deischer, Michael Timpani, Lance Curry, Bill Smith, Paul Cook, John P. Peterson, Ron Hill, Courtney Rogers, Pat Lilja, Don White, Joe Koomen, Jay Ryan, Greg Surman, Frank J. Burgett, Miranda Burgett, Juan Herrero, Bob Jenson, Dave Taggart, Rick Brooks, Philip Schweier, Tahir Bhatti, James L Patterson II, Terry Alan Klasek, Elizabeth Degn, Larry Burbridge, Joe Schleyhahn, Charley Albers, John Lebel, Howard Hopkins, Prof Dr. V. Stosic, Joe Thoms, Andrew Henry, Peter Wrobel, John Simpson, David Pettus, Thomas Fortenberry, Will Murray.

The project was a remarkable success and I would like to personally thank the forty-two Doc fans that participated.

The last of the "How I Discovered Doc Savage" souvenir books have been mailed and by now should have been received by everyone who participated in the project except those people who will be attending Doc Con VII.

Now we begin the job of compiling Volume Two of  HIDDS and we already have some remarkable contributors including Lohr McKinstry, Ron Ely and a special story published with PJ Farmers permission.  If you were not aware or missed out on contributing to volume one, now is your chance to join the fun.  Stories are generally half a page to two pages in length.  We will cut off taking contirbutions to Volume Two after we receive forty stories, so don't deley.

Following Doc Con VII on November 6, 2004 we will reprint just enough copies of Volume One to mail to those people who order copies.

He has come to be regarded as the leading American writer of horror fiction in this century and continues to be a major influence upon the field today; but his life, work, and thought remain poorly understood, and many myths about the man and his work persist. In this, the first full-scale biography in more than twenty years, S. T. Joshi--the leading authority on Lovecraft--has gone back to primary sources to set the record straight on the many-faceted "gentleman from Providence": his early interests in science, mythology, and literature; his involvement in the "amateur journalism" movement; his towering presence in the pulp magazines of the 1920s and the fantasy fandom of the 1930s; and the posthumous rescue of his work by friends and devotees. Along the way, Joshi probes the literary, philosophical, cultural, and historical forces that shaped Lovecraft's work and thought, provides capsule portraits of his close friends and colleagues, and studies the growth and development of all aspects of his creative work. Written from a sympathetic but critical perspective, Joshi's biography dispels many of the myths about Lovecraft the man and win new converts to his distinctive literary work.

James Bond 21
CommanderBond.Net reports that Pierce Brosnan has confirmed that not only is he not going to return to the role of James Bond, but he was in fact fired from the part.  "It's over, it's over, it's absolutely over. They invited me back right before I went to present that film. We're so happy with the success, we want you to come back!' I went on the road as a happy man, you know. I thought we'd get a fifth and no more. That would be it, really." said Brosnan.  "Then one day the phone rang - I was here (in Nassau shooting After the Sunset) - and my agents told me that the goal posts had moved and that they had changed their minds. It was disappointing. It was surprising. And I accepted the knowledge (that his run as 007 was over for good) after 24 hours of being in shock" he continued.  Brosnan claimed he harbours no bitterness though. "None, none, none! It's not worth having. If I did, it would make all the great decade, the four films, the lovely success, meaningless. Bitterness against whom, and for what reason?".

King Conan: Crown of Iron
IGN FilmForce has been advised by sources that, while King Conan: Crown of Iron has been stewing in development hell at Conan Properties, Inc. and Warner Brothers, writer-director John Milius is on the move.  Milius is currently in Turkey where he has secured full funding for King Conan. If that's the case, that would mean Warner Brothers would only have to distribute the film rather than finance it.

IGN FilmForce was also advised that Milius is currently scouting locations in Turkey with some of Conan's private financiers. When filming might begin remains unclear but at least the money is now in place.  Furthermore, Arnold Schwarzenegger may still be involved with the project. Everything depends, however, on whether the Governator runs for re-election but the door for his return is apparently still open.

The Legend of Zorro
Antonio Banderas and Catherine Zeta-Jones have returned to the franchise which helped make their careers - 1998's "The Mask of Zorro" - by shooting the sequel in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, through December.

USA Today reveals that in "The Legend of Zorro" directed by Martin Campbell ("Goldeneye", "The Mask of Zorro"), dashing Alejandro and sultry Elena are married and have a 10-year-old son, Joaquin (Adrian Alonso), who knows nothing of his dad's secret swashbuckling identity.  Besides, the missus would be thrilled if Mr. Z kept his sword sheathed once and for all. But when greedy villains threaten to halt California's statehood, it's Zorro to the rescue once again. Zeta-Jones insist their character's passion is still flaming - "Being married has only enhanced their feelings for each other". The actress has to retrain a bit for her swordfighting skills. The paper also has the first picture from the movie seen to the right.
