As Scribner's Monthly it published some important fiction by Frank R. Stockton, Edward Bellamy, Bret Harte, George Cable, Julian Hawthorne, Helen Hunt Jackson, Joel Chandler Harris, Edward Page Mitchell, Thomas Nelson Page. As Century its circulation peaked at 200,000 (in 1889). Authors included Mark Twain, Jack London, Silas Weir Mitchell, F. Marion Crawford; started as Scribner's Monthly and retitled The Century Magazine in 1881 (although often called The Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine on the cover; merged with The Forum, 1930.
