An aviation magazine, primarily non-fiction, but famous for initiating Captain W.E. Johns's "Biggles" stories (as by William Earle, from the first issue). Later stories in the series appeared in The Boy's Own Paper and elsewhere.

The Popular Magazine

Country: US
Total Issues: 612

First three issues purported to be a boys' magazine but rapidly converted to a men's fiction pulp from Feb-1904. Success came with Haggard's "Ayesha" (1905); also published C.J. Cutcliffe Hyne, Morgan Robertson, H.G. Wells, Rafael Sabatini, Zane Grey; it carved a niche as a middle-of-the-road family magazine. See also possible brief revival under Hardboiled.

Initially The Popular Magazine dated its issues, in common with most other magazines, by the date it should be taken "off" sale - thus an issue might be dated "First July Number" and go on sale on June 7th. In late 1914, however, the policy changed to date the issue by the date it was offered for sale, thus producing 26 issues dated 1914, although only 24 were actually published therein.

Just to make life even more confusing, in late 1928 the policy was switch back - initially with both "First November Number" and "Oct. 7" appearing on the cover, with the latter gradually changing to "On Sale xxx" before being phased out completely - which is why there appear to be no October issues in 1928.
