Adventure House - Coming soon!
WALTER BAUMHOFER: PULP ART MASTERS by John P. Gunnison
For just a few short years, Walter Baumhofer sprang into pop culture history as the first artist to imagine Doc Savage, The Man of Bronze. Baumhofer's unofficial title of "King of the Pulps" was well earned, as most publishers were envious of those few firms that he painted covers and produced art that sold the magazines well beyond the stories themselves. Baumhofer ultimately made the move into lucrative advertising and slick markets in the mid-thirties, but he left behind pulp covers that were imitated for years.
Soft Cover, 9x12, 112 pages, Full Color, $20.00

BLOOD 'N' THUNDER 12/13  - Now available!
The long-awaited double issue of Blood ‘n’ Thunder (12/13) is finally here, and we believe you’ll find it well worth the wait!  We’ve crammed into 64 pages some 40,000 words of copy—enough for a short novel. And we’ve made room for nearly five dozen reproductions of pulp covers, black-and-white illustrations, and photographs.

In “An Author in Search of His Genre,” Brian Taves analyzes the earliest pulp stories written by Talbot Mundy—stories in which the king of high adventure developed his themes and style.  John Locke uses dozens of excerpts from articles penned for writers’ magazines to flesh out his profile of all-but-forgotten pulp humorist and detective-story scribe Thomas Thursday, “A Beezark from the Bozarks.”  And Ed Hulse continues his informal survey of a great pulp magazine in “The Glories of Short Stories: The Thirties.”  Any one of these lengthy articles would dominate an average issue of BnT.

Also: “The Amazing Adventure of Old Marvel,” Joe Rainone’s report on a 19th-century story-paper sleuth who predated, and possibly influenced the creation of, the immortal Sherlock Holmes.  In this issue’s installment of “Tricks of the Trade,” Alfred Jan documents Cornell Woolrich’s “double-dipping,” the practice of selling the same story to two magazines.  Joe McNeill and Steve Korn weigh in with a look at the 1932 George O’Brien thriller Mystery Ranch, the seminal “Western Gothic” film.  Monte Herridge makes his BnT debut with a “Series Spotlight” piece on private eye Pat Oberron, the creation of G. T. Fleming-Roberts.  And we begin a new department, “From the Reading Room.”

This issue’s price is $12.00.
Copies are available from Ed Hulse at $6.00 plus $1.50 for postage.
Please make checks payable to him and send to 2467 Rt 10 East, Bldg 15, Apt 4B, Morris Plains, NJ 07950.

Conan Feature Film - Update!
Recent online rumors were buzzing recently with stories about the Wachowski brothers returning to not only produce the next Conan movie, but to write and direct it and a second installment as well. There were even rumors that Warner Bros. was lining up Arnold Schwarzenegger to reprise the title role and to make Conan the first film once he finishes his political career.

Official word from Warner Bros.:  "All the talk about Arnold Schwarzenegger being in two more Conan films is premature at this point. First, Governor Schwarzenegger has to finish off his term and then he can announce what his plans are."
"The only thing I can tell you at this time is that the WB does want more than one Conan film since the property is seen as a franchise which has spawned toys, comic books, video games etc. I can also tell you that if Arnold wants to make two more Conan films, we will gladly make that deal happen."

King Kong - Super-Deluxe Version on DVD!
Last week I posted that I read a rumor that there will be a Super-Deluxe KING KONG DVD coming later this year.
On March 23rd, ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY posted an online interview with Kong's director, Peter Jackson, that revealed a little bit more information regarding a potential Super-Deluxe DVD release.

Can we expect an extended version of Kong on DVD in the future?
I hope so — that's very much up to Universal. Obviously, doing an extended cut of Kong is expensive.... Every extra minute of film that you add, you're adding potentially another 20 or 30 more visual effects shots. So I think Universal are getting their heads around all that. We're figuring out what the sequences could be, because we do have a lot of really great scenes that we didn't put into the movie — some very very exciting dinosaur sequences — so I'm hoping there will be an extended cut.

On March 27, Peter Jackson talked Kong DVD with Dark Horizons.

Question: And no major deleted scenes or anything like that?

Jackson: No, that's all been saved for ... it depends on Universal making a decision, but they seem to be pretty keen on the idea of doing a 3 or 4 disc release, towards the end of the year which would include deleted scenes and bloopers and a whole new raft of docos that would go a lot deeper into the technical stuff of the making of the film that we couldn't show in the production diaries.

Thanks to John Locke for the tip!

Bison Books - TARZAN ALIVE is now available!
TARZAN ALIVE-A DEFINITIVE BIOGRAPHY OF LORD GREYSTOKE by Philip José Farmer, featuring a new foreword by Win Scott Eckert and an introduction by Mike Resnick, is now available in trade paperback.
It will cost $19.95.

Through the tales of Edgar Rice Burroughs, generations of readers have thrilled to the adventures of Lord Greystoke (aka John Clayton, but better known as Tarzan of the Apes). In this biography Philip José Farmer pieces together the life of this fantastic man, correcting Burroughs's errors and deliberate deceptions and tracing Tarzan's family tree back to other extraordinary figures, including Sherlock and Mycroft Holmes, the Scarlet Pimpernel, Doc Savage, Nero Wolfe, and Bulldog Drummond. TARZAN ALIVE offers the first chronological account of Tarzan's life, narrated in careful detail garnered from Burroughs's stories and other sources. From the ill-fated voyage that led to Greystoke's birth on the isolated African coast to his final adventures as a group captain in the RAF during World War II, Farmer constructs a comprehensive and authoritative account. Farmer's assertion that Tarzan was a real person has led him to craft a biography as well researched and compelling as that of any character from conventional history. This definitive Bison Books edition also includes Farmer's "Exclusive Interview with Lord Greystoke" as well as "Extracts from the Memoirs of 'Lord Greystoke'" first anthologized in MOTHER WAS A LOVELY BEAST.

Three years of solve-it-yourself mysteries, a new one every Friday.
No repeats, no reruns.  Every week a new mini-mystery to test your deductive abilities.

It is a homage to one of Walter Gibson's most famous Shadow pulp tales, "The Grove of Doom."
In it, John tried to capture the original menacing mood of the strange grove of trees and still present a puzzling mystery, all within the confines of a 500-word limit.

MOONSTONE BOOKS - THE PHANTOM: LAW OF THE JUNGLE - Coming in June!
Written by Joe Gentile, art by Paul Guinan.

Moonstone's first wide-vision book!
Every page is a double page spread, sandwiched by prose. This format is not a five-minute read.

Every society has its laws: some written, some unwritten-for some are forbidden to be even spoken aloud. These are the laws that get passed on from one generation to the next. The penalty for breaking these laws is often swift and uncompromising. Combine the lack of this knowledge with the unhinged mind of a deadly assassin who is calling out the Phantom, and you get nothing but fire.

Bang the drum for Paul Guinan's painted art, which has an eerie cinematic quality that ignites a wanton rhthym into the night of the Bangalla jungle. You want to see the Phantom in a different light? You want to see him the way others see him in his world? This is your one chance...if the law allows...

72 pages, $11.99

Kurt Busiek (W), Len Wein (W), Kelley Jones (A), and Michelle Madsen (C)

In the dank alleys of a decaying city, one beggar boy conjures visions of a future where, instead of spitting on him in the streets, the rich and privileged cower in fear of his terrible power. For young Thoth, hunger and pain is a way of life, twisting his heart into believing that no wickedness is too costly if it can afford a means of escape—not even the betrayal of one’s sole confidant in the wretched, unfeeling world.

With art by the inimitable Jones, co-written by Busiek, responsible for the most successful relaunch of a fantasy character in comics history, and Wein, mastermind behind many of comics’ most beloved modern heroes, this series finally reveals the secrets behind the dread sorcerer Thoth-amon!

2006 WINDY CITY PULP & PAPERBACK CONVENTION (#6) - May 5-7, 2006
The Windy City website has been updated to add initial info on next year's show.

IMPORTANT NOTE – In mid-June, the hotel we’d used in April 2005 and had booked for April 2006, the Ramada Plaza O’Hare, informed us they’d been sold and were demolishing their convention facilities in late 2005.  We were fortunate enough to reach a deal with the Wyndham O’Hare (in many respects a nicer hotel) – which is right next to the Ramada – to take the con in 2006, but the only weekend they could accommodate us for 2006 was May 5-7.  So, both the hotel and dates have changed if you pre-registered at the past Windy City Pulp & PB Con!

This year's theme will be celebrating the 75th Anniversary of The Shadow, and in connecion with that anniversary, we're planning a number of special Shadow displays and events.  Please check the website for details as they're available.

Click here to download the pre-registration form.

MEMBERSHIPS:  Memberships are $30 for all three days, $20 for Friday only, $20 for Saturday only, and $10 for Sunday only.  Please note that we can now accept payments online through paypal (account pulpvault@msn.com).  If you register before April 1, 2006, your membership badge will be mailed to you, allowing you to by-pass the registration line and pick up your program book and other materials at your convenience.

DEALER INFO:  Dealer setup begins Friday at 10am – the dealer room is open to the public from 2-6 pm Friday, 9 am-5 pm Saturday and 9 am-4pm Sunday.  There is no access to the room on Thursday.  For dealers, tables are 6’ long.  Each table includes: 1 tablecloth and 2 chairs.  Each dealer and dealer’s helper must also buy a membership.  Tables are SOLD OUT – please email to be placed on the waitlist.

GUEST OF HONOR:  Artist Jim Steranko – well known to pulp fans for his fantastic Shadow paperback covers, as well as a host of other terrific art – will be our Guest of Honor.  He will be displaying his original Shadow covers, as well as giving a presentation on Saturday.  Also, Frank Gladney, son of Shadow pulp artist Graves Gladney, will be a guest at the con and will be displaying a number of his father’s original Shadow pulp covers, as well as giving a presentation on Graves Gladney on Friday. Previous Guests of Honor Frank Robinson and Ernest Chiriacka will also be attending the con.

AUCTION:  The auction will kick off Saturday at 8 pm.  If you have material you’d like to submit, please contact us at info@windycitypulpandpaper.com.

ART SHOW:  We will once again be hosting an art show displaying original pulp and paperback art.  For the second year in a row, the art show is sponsored by Dan Zimmer and the fine folks at Illustration magazine (http://www.illustration-magazine.com).  If you have any art you’d like to make available for display in the art show, please contact us.  The art show will be open Saturday and Sunday mornings and afternoons.

PULP FILM FEST:  Our Pulp Film Fest shows old movies based on pulp stories, on 16 mm film.  There will be one session Friday (beginning around 8 pm) and one session Saturday (following the auction).  More info will be posted on the website closer to the con.  The Pulp Film Fest is organized by Ed Hulse and sponsored by Blood ‘N’ Thunder magazine (http://www.geocities.com/poppub/).

PROGRAM BOOK:  All attendees will receive a program book, containing pulp articles and reprints.  To advertise in the program book, rates are: full page ads $60 (4 1/8" x 6.75"), half page $35 (4 1/8" x 3 3/8"), business card size $20 (3.25" x 2").  The deadline for submitting and paying for ads is March 1, 2006.  Please contact Tom Roberts at tom.roberts2@insightbb.com for ad matters (other than payment).

CON SUITE:  Our con suite will operate from Friday afternoon until late Saturday night/early Sunday morning – stop by and grab a drink and some munchies, while chatting about our favorite hobby.

WEBSITE:  The con’s website is http://www.windycitypulpandpaper.com.  We’ll be posting updates to it periodically up until the time of the show, so please check it for the most recent information.

HOTEL INFO:  The Wyndham is only minutes from O’Hare airport (the hotel operates a free shuttle service which runs approximately every 20 minutes – and from the east, you can now circle around the city, rather than go through; from other directions, you don’t have to go through the city).  The room rates at the new Hotel are $92/night plus tax (which is the same as the rate at our old hotel).  One car per room parks free of charge; otherwise there’s a parking charge of $6.00 (no in and out privileges).
Please make sure to mention the convention when booking hotel rooms.  Thanks!

T. Fleming-Roberts, Cornell Woolrich's legal problems stemming from self-plagarism, an analysis of the 1932 "Western Gothic" film MYSTERY RANCH, and a fascinating piece on an 1880s story-paper sleuth who anticipated Sherlock Holmes to an uncanny degree.  And there will be the usual departments.

Conan Feature Film - Update!
Though rumours previously said otherwise, a source for top Schwarzenegger fansite The Arnold Fans says that
Schwarzenegger might indeed be returning to the throne of barbarian, Conan.

Warner are relaunching the popular "Conan the Barbarian" films, with the next chapter widely known as
KING CONAN.
Jeff Robinov, president of the WB film division told the following to The Arnold Fans:

"I can't say much but Jeff Robinov is definitely hoping that Arnold looses the race for a 2nd term as governor so he can make his place back into feature films with KING CONAN. The film might not even be called KING CONAN anymore and instead go back to CONAN THE CONQUEROR. The title KING CONAN sounds like a finale and that's not what Warner Bros. wants."

"If Arnold looses the next term, the WB wants the new Conan epic shooting on a grueling gorilla schedule around the clock starting March 2007 for a December 2007 release date. If Spielberg can do it for WAR OF THE WORLDS it can be done."
