fiction of a highly moral and improving nature, its full title saying
"designed for the defence of Biblical truth and the advancement of
religion." The religious stranglehold was relaxed after Cassell's death
in 1865. Only writer of note in early years was Mrs Henry Wood; later it
published such popular authors as Rider Haggard ("When the World Shook,"
